Passenger Lists
« on: Wednesday 22 June 05 16:37 BST (UK) »
I have a whole family of Hancocks that seem to disappear between the 1851 and 1861 Census.  One theory is that they emigrated.  Any ideas where I should go from here?  Is there somewhere that you can do a search on passenger lists when you don't know the vessel?

The family I am looking for is the HANCOCK family from Swanage.  William (1808), Ann (1806), Selina (1845), Mary (1830), Louisa (1834), Priscilla (1837), Elizabeth (1832), John (1843), Caroline (1847), William (1850) and Ann (1832).  They had another daughter named Maria who I can trace.

Maybe you recognise these names?

Thanks,

Mark.

Hi, have you tried the Immigrant Ships Transcribers Guild? It's addy is www.immigrantships.net.  Your guys are probably too early to be in the Ellis Island database (1892-1924) www.ellisisland.org.   There are some links in this artcle http://www.genealogy.com/8_mgpal.html and Cyndis List has a whole section of links: http://www.cyndislist.com/ships.htm.

Hope you find them!  Kate

Hi Mark,
Where do you think they might have emigrated to?  if Australia, there are plenty of websites with passenger lists, and I'll be happy to post them here if you need them.
Cheers

There are a few places to look.  Even all together they are not comprehensive, but you might get lucky!  I have been very lucky and have found the arrivals of all of my immigrant families through these sites.

#1.  http://www.records.nsw.gov.au/
Click on "Search Online Indexes" on the main page, and then choose a list to search

#2.  http://www.blaxland.com/ozships/page.htm
Has passengers lists

#3.  http://www.theshipslist.com/
Passenger lists

#4.  http://www.nla.gov.au/pathways/jnls/newsite/browse/geoghist.html#Genealogy%20(A.C.T.)
Lots of online and hard-copy genealogical indexes, in particular there is one called the NSW Pioneers Index which I have found particularly useful.  Unfortunately they don't have it online yet, but there are several ways to access it, as you'll see on the site.

#5.  Also look at BDMs for NSW (http://www.bdm.nsw.gov.au/familyHistory/searchHistoricalRecords.htm - free to search, pay to order) and for Victoria (http://www.dvc.vic.gov.au/bdm.htm - pay to search and order).  You never know.

These are the main ones that I have used.  Got to be worth a try!

Happy to help further if need be.

William HANCOCK b.1808 Swanage I think is the brother of my 3xgg George HANCOCK b.1790 Swanage.

Hi Mark

On your original post you said you had a Maria who you could trace. Could you tell me a bit more about her. I have a Maria Robinson Hancock born Poole 1860 who married William Charles Newman (my great grandfather) in 1879. Could this be the same Maria?
