Help please finding a family in the 1861 census.
« on: Thursday 13 March 14 17:33 GMT (UK) »
Can anyone find this family in the 1861 census:-

Joseph Richardson born about 1815 in Leeds, Yorkshire - Professor of flute.
Mary Ann Richardson born about 1814 in Nettlebed, Oxon. (Wife)
Ellen Richardson born 1837 in Rotherham, Yorkshire.
Joseph Richardson born 1838 in Middlesex.
Kate Richardson born 1847 in Middlesex.

On the 1851 Census they lived in St George Hanover Square, Belgrave.  ED 45ss   Household schedule 35   Piece 1478  Folio 576  page 8.

Joseph senior died in 1862.

On the 1871 census Mary Ann and Kate are living in Battersea.  ED23  sch 114  piece 703  folio126  page 31.

Joseph junior seems to have married in 1865 and in 1871 is working as a bankers clark and living in Marylebone:  ED2, sch16,  piece 421  folio 21 page 4.

I can't find any other records for Ellen.

The family could possibly be living with Richard Tull, father in law, born about 1785 in Yorkshire, and/or Louisa Tull born 1838 in Middlesex. They lived at the same address as the Richardsons in 1851.

They did, however, seem to remain in London.

I was quite excited to discover recently that Joseph Richardson senior was Queen Victoria's flautist -he is my gr gr uncle!

Thanks, it looks like the Hanover Square pages are missing - how frustrating!

Hi

A long shot, they may have been on the IOW census, he may have been preforming for the Queen, I thought Joseph may have left a Will, but there is nothing showing.

Thank you.

Could you post a link to the census or tell me who else is living there please - I just can't seem to find it!

The information about Ellen is a great help.

Hi Erica236
I am researching the Tull family and have more information on Richard Tull. The 1851 transcript is wrong - he was born 1785 at Southridge in Streatley, Berkshire, and he's not a plasterer, he's a maltster, working for Eliots Brewery (later Watneys) in Pimlico. Moved to Nettlebed Oxon in the 1800s and married Ann Hayward or Haywood 1812, four children - Mary Ann bc1813, John b1814, Alfred Henry b1819, and then Louisa b1838 after they moved to London. He moved to London in 1828 - there's an account of his farm in Nettlebed going for auction in Jackson's Oxford Journal 27/9/1828. Richard is the second son of John Tull of Southridge b 1755 (Streatley baptisms), and John was the eldest son of John Tull and Martha Slade of Southridge. I have yet to find the family in 1861, (Richard died 1854), but I have quite a lot of other data, including the will of Richard's brother (also John of Southridge) proved 1846, in which Richard was left the farm and estate at Southridge once John's widow died. Instead it was sold to their younger brother Henry by said widow. Something odd there.
