Ham House Academy .

Hello. My ancestor Robert Willoughby was born in 1828 in Wantage Berkshire. In the 1841 census he is in Ham House Academy . Does any one know where it was.

I can't find him in the 1841 census for some reason, and am having problems with very slow internet at present, but what you can do is look at the neighbouring addresses to get an indication of the location of Ham House Academy.

I believe there is such a place as Ham House which still exists today though I don't know if this has any association with Ham House Academy. You can also check the first page of the enumerator's book to see which streets were covered in distributing and collecting the census.

You can then do a bit of cross checking on old and new maps of the area to try to narrow down it's location, keeping in mind that street names may have changed and the area may have been developed beyond recognition.

I found this reference to it:
Ham House Academy in Wantage. This is a large house in several acres of ground at the southwest corner of Wantage which was a private school.

By the way, can you confirm his name as spelled in 1841? Or supply reference numbers for the 1841. I couldn't find him when I looked earlier ...

In the Wantage transcripts from the Oxford FHS the baptism entry reads;
6-7-1827 Robert Willoughby s/o Charles & Mary, Meat Man - born 11-6-1827

In the burials there are  these;
27-10-1843 Charles Willoughby, 49 of Grove.
14-10-1867 Mary          "         , 73, Locks Lane, Wantage.
