Illigitimate births in 1912
« on: Sunday 16 March 14 15:36 GMT (UK) »
Hello
Does anyone know why I cannot find a birth certificate for my relative who was born in England (possibly Preston) in September 1912 and was born to an unmarried mother?  I have searched all the births in that year for the name and can't find a birth certificate for her.  Thank you for any help you can give me.  SuszQ

What's your relatives name and name of her mother? What makes you think it's possibly Preston area?

My grandmother had an illegitimate child in 1922 and I just found the birth certificate in the 'normal' way

In 1912 you will have mother's maiden name recorded - for illegitimate births with FreeBMD the mother's maiden name is transcribed as her current name.  That can help (not always the case as my other grandmother married someone with the same surname but can narrow it down)

Do you have details so we can try?

You may have to ignore the Preston bit in case she was sent away to give birth

Several things come to mind here and I hope none of it sounds too simplistic.
1. Have you considered that they may have gone out of the area to have the child - we had one who I knew was born in a certain year and even the quarter they were born in, but they had been sent to Blackpool to give birth!! That took a while to find I can tell you as we have no links to Blackpool!
2. If you have a year of birth and a possible location, have you tried searching for the person just by their Christian name(s) and then looking at the surnames, to see if the child was registered in the fathers name? If you don't know the fathers name, see if any names ring any bells.
3. If that fails, again try just with Christian name and search through each quarter again to see if any name jumps out at you. It's always possible someone was 'economical' with stating the year of birth so widening the year search might help too.
1912 should have the birth showing the mums maiden name, but sometimes in searching , less is more!
In sensitive cases, you may not wish to post the name on here and we all understand that, but if you wanted too and they are definitely deceased now, then I'm sure people would be happy to help search with you. Best Wishes

If the birth is truly elusive, try looking under the mother's mother's maiden surname.

I know of a couple of cover-ups, birth out of the area but in Granny's maiden surname, but the first names were unusual enough to stick out whilst looking.

Hello to everyone who replied to my posting regarding an illigitimate birth.

The person I am researching is a May Smith (common name I know!).  Her mother's name was Maud Mary Ellithorn.  May was born on 26 September 1912.  According to the 1911 Census, her mother lived at Watling St Road in Fulwood, Preston, but as mentioned, she could have gone away to have the baby.  I do not know the name of May's father but I think it could have been my grandfather, but that's only a guess.  His name was Frederick George Davis.  I searched all the births for a May Smith in 1912, but I couldn't find any to a mother named "Ellithorn".  Thank you for your help.
