The lost Reeds

Paul and Kezia Reed last found on the 1871 census in Durham they had a daughter Eliza Jane in 1867 in Cornwall and a son John Molard Reed 1872 in Durham,who I have found again in Yorkshire, but on Elizas wedding certificates in1889 it says her father is deceased but I can't find any deaths for Paul or Kezia.

Could you tell us where and when you found John Molard Reed in Yorkshire?

Where was Eliza Jane married?

Its difficult, I know,  to decide what detail to put in a query, but census references for definite sightings and narrowing down places for births and marriages to below county level really do help others to look for you.

It appears that they had another child, Matilda,  born and baptised in East Rainton, Co Durham in 1875

Birth registered 1875 Q4 Houghton 10a 495

but sadly, death registered 1877 Q1 Houghton, 10a 265 , aged 1

but at least that tells you where the family were up the the beginning of 1877 :-)

Using Family Search I searched the 1881 census.

I asked for matches for a man called Paul with a wife called Kezia, left everything else blank just to see what comes up.

I only got one match.  https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/XQFT-5P3 for a family living in Featherstone, Yorkshire


Minus points - its a different surname so that's always a drawback :-)  but errors on census returns aren't unheard of, and folk changing their names for unknown reasons isn't unheard of either. No Eliza Jane, but she would have been approx 14 so perhaps was elsewhere, working.

Plus points - its the only result for a couple with these first names, they were both born in Cornwall, they do have a son called John M, who was born in Rainton, County Durham, plus a daughter, Isabella who was born in Rainton, Co Durham. So far I have been unable to find likely birth registrations in Durham for a John M  and Isabella SIMEONS, but there 'are' possibles for these names with the surname of REED.

Far from conclusive, but I'd say it was worth filing away and looking into if all else fails.

1871 census Paul,Kezia and Eliza J are in East Rainton Durham.

Eliza Jane was my Great Grandma and my mum used to go to visit Elizas brother Johns family in Monk Bretton Barnsley.
I found John Mollard Reed born Houghton in Durham in 1872 on the 1901 census in Monk Bretton.
Eliza Jane Reed was married to Ben Addy in 1889 in Huddersfield and it said on the cert that Paul her father was deceased.
I have found a Isabella Reed born 1873 in Houghton Durham.

It does seem that they have changed their name on the 1881 census but John and Eliza went back to Reeds.
I have not found Paul or Kezia after 1881 but did find Pauls mums maiden name it was Symons very close to Simeons.
