What does it mean when a reference is made to [date] last?
« on: Wednesday 19 March 14 08:57 GMT (UK) »
Hi All

I am currently searching some newspapers and came across the following date of death but am not sure exactly what it means so thought i put put it to the forum.

The following excerpt was in the Liverpool Mercury 26 April 1890. "The Will of Mr. Thomas Lloyd, D.L., J.P., a director of Lloyd’s Bank, late of The Priory, Warwick, who died on Jan. 25 last,.....".

What therefore is the date of death please. ???

I think it would mean that the man died on Jan 25, 1890.

Thanks one and all - at the heart of my question was to develop an understanding of what 'last' meant - I would have thought you would say whatever the date was without using the word 'last' plus i started to worry about the fact the death happened in Jan so maybe the least applied to the year before...

But I have the specific answer for the question of Thomas' date of death and am grateful. :)
