was Cornelius glue a soldier?
« on: Thursday 20 March 14 12:09 GMT (UK) »
I have some evidence that Cornelius glue (1857 Harting, Sussex) was a soldier prior to his marriage in Lancing in 1884, yet this is a contradiction to his occupation of carpenter on the 1881 census.

can anyone help me to either confirm or not whether he was a soldier, where would i find his army records?

thank you

Helen

Helen

Hi,

There are some early military records on Find My Past.  What evidence do you have that shows him to be a soldier?

hi Helen
no Cornelius glue -glew service/pension records showing so even if he was in the army his service record would have been destroyed approx. 20 yrs after his leaving the regiment , no other records exist I,m afraid .

Ok, thank you both.

The evidence, Nanny Jan is that a partner of Ellen Battman's was a soldier, Ellen married Cornelius, who subsequently seems to disappear (abroad with his regiment possibly).  So in a wider agenda of trying to find him and in the absence of any further marriage/death/ emigration records I'm persuing unsuccessfully a possible soldier link.

Hi Helen

As Trevor says, if he did not earn a pension they would not have keep his record.

I have checked the 1884 Army List and found that the 4th Dragoon Guards were in Brighton. So they may have had a detachment in Lancing or they meet in Brighton.

You need to check the muster book for the 4DGs for 1884 to see if he was serving. They are in Kew, and not available on line.

Ken

I have the case notes of Cornelius's mother in law (she was in Knowles Asylum, Fareham) and apparently Corneilius is a soldier in 1879.   It is very confusing as in 1881 he is listed as a carpenter in Harting at his uncles (parents dead), whilst in 1883 he is listed as a carpenter from Walburton.

Then he disapears, do you know what role a carpenter might have in the 4th Dragoon Guards?

Thanks again.

hi Helen
I,ll get in quick before ken tells you the proper answer  ;D ;D, no seriously  all cavalry regts had a saddle tree maker this entails making a wooden frame that the saddler formed the leather over , do a google search for saddle makers and several come up that show you what a saddle tree looks like mostly American tis true but works of art they are none the less , so I,m sticking with that reason why a chippie was in the cavalry regiment  ;)
best wishes
