Paxman
« on: Saturday 22 March 14 08:39 GMT (UK) »
My Great-Uncle Walter William Paxman (jnr) was born in 1885 in Herefordshire, but became a Game keeper on an estate  in Tisbury. I have found him on 1911 census living at West Lodge. He went off to serve in the Great War as a Gunner with RGA. He lost a leg and was awarded a Silver War Badge (RGA/1450). His regimental number was 91618. None of his other records survive due to WWII Blitz. He went on to have a daughter (another Ada) and a grandson. Are there any records of RGA that might shed some light on when & where he lost his leg? Or any other facts that anyone might have come across to shed further light on him? He lived in Wiltshire the rest of his life. He died in 1953.

Thank you, in hope!

If no joy here, try the Armed Forces board in the Special Interest section of the Forum.

Found a newspaper article in the Western Gazette,21/11/1919.
Tisbury Magistrates Court,,,,,Alleged Poaching Affray.on Lady Octavia Shaw-Stewarts estate.
Gamekeeper Edward Hughes commited for trial at Wilts Assizes.
......
Head game keeper Walter Paxman said he heard four shots fired. All the shots came from one spot and he was about 70 yards away,,,,,   they were after 2 gypsies poaching.

Perhaps someone else can put the whole article on here so you can read it,reference F M Past.

Wiltshire and Swindon Records Centre should have records of the Assizes and also copies of the local papers of the time.   They are at Cocklebury Road, Chippenham, Wiltshire, SN15 3QN.   E-mail heritageadmin@wiltshire.gov.uk.   Tel 01249705500

They may be willing to look up info and are most helpful and obliging.
