I wonder if anyone can shed a little light on the life and times of my Great Great Great Grandfather, John Bridge?

The little I ‘know’:

Census: 06 Jun 1841
3 year old child Oratia Bridge living with Linly family on York Street. Also Horatio Bridge, son of John and Mary Bridge, living just around the corner in Howard Court, Ashton under Lyne. I believe this to be the same child (my Great Great Grandfather, Horatio Lindley Bridge) and Mary Linly to be his mother Mary Bridge.
Queries:
•   Why dual entries for mother and child
•   Why mother registered with maiden name
Note. Mary’s sister, Maria Linly.

Census: 30 Mar 1851
Linley and Bridge families living next door to each other on York Street, Ashton under Lyne.

12 Nov 1860
Horatio’s marriage certificate shows father John to be alive (or, at least, not recorded as deceased).

Census:  07 Apr 1861
Horatio and his wife, Mary, living with Mariah Lindley – his mother’s sister (Horatio’s aunt).
Query:
•   Where are John and Mary?

Queries:
•   John Bridge’s birth record (detailing his parents): Mottram, Cheshire, Est 1816
•   John and Mary’s marriage record: Ashton under Lyne, Est 1837
•   Horatio Bridge’s birth record: Ashton under Lyne, Est 1838
•   John and Mary’s death records: Ashton under Lyne, Est 1860

I’d appreciate any comments or advice on how to clarify any of these questions.

Welcome to RootsChat  :)
The census forms were distributed in the week before the census day, and could have been filled in at anytime assuming who would be in the house at mid-night on the Sunday. Therefore you sometimes get people enumerated twice, at their usual home and at a house they happened to be visiting. This is a fairly common event and has been mentioned before on RootsChat.

Hi,

I’ve done quite a bit of work on the Bridge’s of Ashton and there are a number of families, most of which I’ve been unable to link together. As far as I’ve been able to determine this Horatio (Horatio Bridge / Margaret Cuthbert) is not ‘one of mine’.

David.

…however Horatio Lindley Bridge most definitely is ‘one of mine’; this is my Great Great Grandfather; the son of John. Is there a scan of the christening record anywhere? Does it show his mother’s (Mary) maiden name? I’ve assumed that Horatio took his middle name from his mother’s family but I’ve not been able to confirm this.

David.

Next time I am in the archives centre, I will look at the record on the film. I don't think that it will have his mother's name on .

The christening record is on Ancestry. If you are in England, some of the libraries have free access.
