Thanks very much for the suggestions. I'd already thought that Charlotte might have been Gladys because I couldn't find her on later censuses but then I found a Lottie Shone on the 1901 census in Wales so think she might be that Charlotte.
I don't think the Stockport one is her because 'my' Gladys is on the 1891 census as age 1.
There's an interesting thing on the 1901 census which names Gladys as Gladys HOWELL and describes her as illegitimate.
She's back as Shone on the 1911 census.
Unfortunately I don't know Gladys's mother's first name at the moment - I'm researching for a friend. I've been told that she's believed to have gone abroad but no one knows where. Have asked for her name but not been told yet.
When I know her first name I can contact the register office to get the certificate for Charlotte if the details - mother's name & no father - match for Gladys although having come across Lottie Shone, I' m not very optimistic.
