Newnham Murren or Crowmarsh look up request
« on: Thursday 23 June 05 10:59 BST (UK) »
Hi,

I have a dead end in Mr Richard Scudds b 7-6-1835 in Newnham Murren.  I can find no record of his birth using the net, so am hoping someone out there might help me.

He left England for Australia in 1855 on the ship Constitution, and from here on I have alot of detail, but prior to this he seems to be non-existant.  His parents are listed as not known on his death certificate.

I have located another Richard Scudds who i think may be his father.  This richard b 1810 in Wallingford, but living in Newnham Murren at the 1861 census, married to Mary b 1810  They had son charles b1841 in Crowmarsh living with them at the time.

There were a few Scudd's born around the same time and in either Newnham Murrenn or Crowmarsh as my Richard that may be brothers and sisters.  Israel b 1828 Newnham, Thomas b 1843, Sarah b 1836 Oxfordshire, John b 1828 Wallingford, James 1841 b Crowmarsh, elizabeth b1829 Crowmarsh, Benjamin b 1833 Oxfordshire.

I've spent alot of time trying to establish a link, but getting nowwhere and I'm not sure what to do now - this is all the information I have.

Frustrated. ???

Hi,
Have you tried the 1861 census?

For what its worth - I think you are probably right that Richard & Mary were your Richards parents - they don't seem very particular about having their kids baptised - not in the C of E church anyway - perhaps they were non-conformist?

The only way to be sure I think will be to track down the family in the 1841 census - sadly I don't have it - I think it is possible to purchase it on Microfiche from OFHS (so long as you have access to a reader)

Best of Luck

Who knows, I'm really confused - I mean it could be Thomas and Sarah were the parents - they had a Richard who died before turning 1, one year before the year of my Richard's birth.  Would they name the next child the same as one who had died?  There's also a gap where they didn't have any children according to this between 1834 and 1839, so it could be so.

I think this 16 yr old could be my Richard - the age is certainly right.

So, is there anyone out there with access to the 1841 census?

Hi Again

If nobody replies on here you could try Oxfordshire Family History Society at http://searches.oxfordshirefhs.org.uk/#census41
who will do a search for you for a modest fee (£1.50 I think)
If you get a result either way and want to try and delve further back I have the register transcripts for both Newnham & Crowmarsh

Good lUck
