William Elliott
« on: Tuesday 25 March 14 09:45 GMT (UK) »
???My g g grandfather married Sarah Jane Jones in 1896 at the register office in Birmingham in 1896 his age being 40 years, profession plumber, they lived at 56 hucklery hill Birmingham. His late father also William was a commercial traveller. it shows that he was a widower at the time of this marriage. I have located all the family to liverpool, siblings etc via the 1911, 1901 and 1891 census. in these census, states he was born southwark London. Unable to locate anything on him prior to 1891,would like some assistance with where his family were. His address in the 1891 census shows 19 bright terrace guildford street Aston Aston manor. In the 1901 census his address was 217 new john street west Birmingham. Also his age Dob 1863 in the census are different to his marriage certificate When William died in 1914 his age shows as 53 years! so am stuck with where to look next, any help would be appreciated
regards
sue

The ages are out a lot aren't they  :-\

There's a Frederick William Elliott birth 29 Oct 1856 baptism Southwark parents William and Elizabeth.

Is he down as a widower in 1891?  Is he with other family or just lodging somewhere?

Found the 1891 with wife Sarah J - so he married two ladies called Sarah J  ???

Children Ethel 2 and Willard 1.

The Sarah J in 1901 has the same birthplace as the Sarah J in 1891 so looks like the same wife to me.

This William is a widower by 1911.

I wonder if the 1896 marriage is a different William as it doesn't seem to fit this one.

Thanks for your interest. I believe the marriage of William and Sarah Jane is correct, on the marriage certificate shows her father as Henry Jones who we have traced to Shropshire. Sarahs sister Mary Elizabeth  Dearden (Jones) looked after my Grandmother Eleanor Elsie Elliott after sarah died in 1911.

So you think he was living with Sarah Jane Jones and had two children with her 5 years before they married?

Who was his first wife if he was a widower in 1896?  Who is the mother of the two children in 1891 first wife or second wife to be?

Sorry if have got confused.

In the 1891 census shows that Sarah is married age 24 and William age 28, I presumed they are married to each other. Also the 1891 census says his birth year is 1863. Now on their marriage certificate in 1896 his age states as 40 years and hes a widower. now the 2 children born out of wedlock,  On his marriage certificate and her marriage certificate they are both the  Elliott surname. I have asked the question do you need any evidence to prove you are a widower when you remarry?
Was he just a widower one day and got married the next

But they didn't marry till 1896 so either they were just living together in 1891 or this is a different woman.

I don't think you had to prove you were a widower but if he was who was his first wife, when did she die, did they have children etc

Still not sure it is the same William due to the difference in ages :-\

???Don't believe it a different women, but it could be a possibility. All the information I have certainly points to these two.
Haven't got any details on the first wife or children, where would I start to look?
