Un-readable Birth Places
« on: Saturday 29 March 14 02:02 GMT (UK) »
Hi,
I hope someone that is familiar with the Rawtenstall area can help me figure out the birth places for the following family and give me some idea why they kept changing their birth place.

Joseph Ashworth, Wife Elizabeth & Children: Edmund, David, Wilfred, Joseph, Harry, George, Clara, & Jack

1881 Census: Tottingham Higher End
Joseph 33 years  born in Horncliff
Elizabeth 25 years born in Lench
Edmund age 1 born in Townend Fold

1891 census: Tottingham Higher End
Joseph 44 year Born Edenfield
Elizabeth 35  born in Rough Lee
All the children born in Edenfield:
Edmund 11
David 9
Wilfred 4
Joseph 2
Harry 3 days old

1901 census in Rawtenstall
Joseph 53 born in Balladin
Elizabeth 45 Born in Cowpe
Edmund 21 born in Birch Colt
Rest of the boys were born in Cleggs Buildys
David 19
Wilfred 14
Joseph 12
Harry 10
George 6
Jack 5
and daughter Clara age 2 born in Birch Colt

I found on the FreeBMD wesite Joseph Ashworth married Elizabeth Ann Robinson in the Sept. Qtr.  1877 in Haslingden Dist. 8e- page 191 but can't find this marriage on Ancestry. If anyone has access to this marriage I would really like to know when & where it took place. This family went to Canada in 1907.

Thank-you for your time and I really would appreciate any help anyone can offer.

Hi

 www.lan-opc.org.uk/

The marriage is on there, unfortunately Joseph Ashworth married Ellen Greenwood, and Elizabeth Ann Robinson married James Holland.

Hi

There is another marriage in 1876 which may fit better

Joseph Ashworth and Elizabeth Ann Ormerod at Edenfield Parish Church, think this maybe the one as all children were born Edenfield in 1891 census.

Thanks Claire for your help.
I too seen the marriage between Joseph Ashworth & Elizabeth Ann Ormerod but after searching other census I found Henry Ashworth & Elizabeth on the 1881 census in New Church, Lancs. With them is a son Ormerod age 8 born in Rawtenstall so I wondered if this was the Elizabeth Omerod who was married to Joseph and she used her maiden name to name a son.

This family has me totally confused. Why couldn't they just keep the same birth place, makes the tracing a whole lot easier.

Hi,

The 1881 census shows that Edmund Ashworth was listed as Edmund E Ashworth aged 1 living in Edenfield district with parents Joseph Ashworth aged 33 a stonemason and Elizabeth A.

If you check:-
 http://www.lancashirebmd.org.uk/cgi/birthind.cgi

Edmund Ernest Ashworth was registered in 1879 in sub-district Edenfield which is under the the Hyndburn region, mother's maiden name Ormerod.
Other children registered in Edenfield with mother's maiden name Ormerod are as per your list:-

David in 1881
Wilfred in 1886
Joseph 1888
Harry 1891
George 1894

Jack and Clara are listed under Hyndburn- Rawtenstall A 1st, mother's maiden name Ormerod
Jack 1895
Clara 1898

The marriage Claire t found in 1876 does look to be the correct one.

Also if you look on the Mormon website re George Ashworth born in 1894, there is a death cert viewable where George is listed as born 28 May 1894 passing away in Mission, BC, Canada in 1969 husband of Elizabeth nee Moran. Parents are Joseph Ashworth and Elizabeth Ann nee Ormerod.

https://familysearch.org

and
http://www.genuki.org.uk/big/eng/LAN/Edenfield/

will help you familiarise yourself with the Edenfield area.

Hope this helps,
Anne

On 1891 census, Harry Ashworth is 3 days old.
From www.lancashirebmd.org.uk

1891 Harry Ashworth registered Edenfield mother's maiden name Ormerod

Hi,

I too have Ashworths amongst others born “Edenfield” and years ago when I first started found them  difficult to research.  It is still tricky to explain it all!

Edenfield was a parish and not just a village.  You can see it marked on http://maps.familysearch.org .  It was also a chapelry in the parish of Bury.  Now whilst people could get married at Edenfield Parish Church from 1837 many still opted to trot down to the ancient parish church of St. Mary`s, Bury, so always bear this in mind especially when looking for earlier pre 1837 records when they had to marry there.

The parish of Edenfield was also in Tottington Higher End at one point.  So on different census you may find Joseph`s  place of birth as Balladen, Horncliff, Townsend Fold (all within throwing distance) , Edenfield, Tottington Higher End and even Bury.  you just have to look for the likely candidates I`m afraid.

You can view old maps on www.old-maps.co.uk
type in the coordinate boxes 380473 and 421650 the Go.
When it loads choose from the selection at the right hand side.
The 1893 one is quite clear and you can see just how close Balladen, Horncliffe and Townsend Fold were.

Looking at the census entries and their address they never really moved from Townsend Fold – the boundaries just changed as it finally came under Rawtenstall.

By the way the baptisms on lan-opc are missing for the years you want.

Regards,
Mo
