Emily Eliza BRIDGER c1837 Mayfield Birth needed please
« on: Saturday 29 March 14 20:57 GMT (UK) »
Hi

I'm looking for the birth/baptism of Emily Eliza Bridger born in 1837 in Mayfield Sussex.

Her marriage certificate to William Marchant in 1856 says father John Bridger, Farmer.

Census does not help as I believe there are two Emily Bridgers, one set of possible parents is John and Eliza the other John and Mary.

I did post years ago and got some info but still not luck with her birth.

Any help is much appreciated
Thanks

If she was born before 1.7.1837 - Civil Registration - there won't be a birth cert - only a possible baptismal entry

Failure to register a birth only became a fineable offence in 1874 so even if she was born after 1.7.1837 - there are no guarantees that her birth was registered

I'm just searching for anyone who may also be looking at this family who may have documents and things to prove who is who.

I think there are two Emily Bridgers both borne in Mayfield in 1837, there is a Sussex website that had my Emily muddled with the other :(  I think mine is attached to the family with the strange Roman names as mine is linked to Octavia in a few documents, but not sure.

The marriage cert I have for mine has been witnessed by Octavia Bridger, and on 1891 census my Emily's daughter Winefred is visiting with Octavia, there is also a Emily Eliza Bridger listed with Octavia's family on the 1851 census however on this Emily (age13) is listed as "visitor" but in smaller letters it says "daur" the word "visitor" puts doubt into her belonging to this family :(  She is not shown with this family on the 1841 census as you would expect but there is a Emily Eliza 1837 shown as daur of John and Eliza Bridger at a different address in Mayfield (no trace of these anywhere else)  wonders if she  moved to live with them sometime between 1841 and 1851.

There is another Emily Bridger 1837 on the 1841 census in Mayfield with parents Thomas and Ann, oh so that make 3!!!

There is one birth on the BMD index, however with a possibiity of 3 Emily's I am reluctant to spend money on a cert which may not be the right one.

I have been piecing together Bridger family groups and trawling through screens of records forever but have come to a dead end :(

Hello Patches

It maybe an idea if you have loads of Sussex Ancestors to join The Sussex Family History Group It give members online access to Baptisums & Burials

A Emily Bridger was baptised at Mayfield,9 April 1837 daughter of Thomas & Ann.Thomas a Farmer.

Emily Eliz Bridger,5 Nov 1837,daughter of John & Eliza,John a Farmer.

Emily Eliza`s birth was registered which can be applied for at the GRO in Southport

Hi

Thankyou, I was beginning to think she was John and Eliza's child, but wonders why she has such a strong link with Octavia's family, will explore parents are siblings and she swaps family :/

How good is the Sussex site as I am reluctant to spent more money on another site which turns out to be not so helpful?

Thanks

I agree with omega - http://www.sfhg.org.uk/ is well worth joining - it is by far the best Family History group I have come across (I belong to a few) and the database that membership gives you access to is very useful if you have Sussex ancestors - the Sussex Marriage Index is also an invaluable resource - both are very reasonable considering how much they contain.

SFHG is well worth the money.
Have you looked at http://theweald.org/      If not then you are missing a treat.   Hundreds of Mayfield records.
Emily Eliza Marchant (Bridger) was baptised on Nov 5th 1837 dau of John and Eliza.  He is a farmer.  I wonder why her surname is shown as Marchant with Bridger in brackets?    There are a few other similar entries.
