Ham Green Hospital , Pill
« on: Wednesday 02 April 14 20:04 BST (UK) »
Wondered if anyone has pictures of the hospital post WW2 ?
I have grandparents that died there in the 1970s and remember the road leading down to the hospital and turning point at the end leading off into the grounds . There were brick blocks on the right hand side from memory which I believe are now modern day housing .
Appreciate any help in this matter and if possible a P . M with and photo attachment .

If you Google "Ham Green Hospital" lots of info turns up - including photos!
(You DID try Google, didn't you? ;D)

I come from Portishead and travelled past Ham Green on many occasions, both by bus (Service 368 & 369) and by train pre-Beeching (Ham Green Halt)

EDIT: have a look at this also:

Yes thanks KGarrad , just looked at the links you replied with and had previously viewed these pictures on these sites . The house is on a couple of other sites as well but sadly no pics of the aforementioned blocks ( right hand side ) . Although not living in the area now , I remember the bus routes you give going off the main route in and out of Pill and down to the hospital on certain days and times . I know this area , like many , has changed in a short period of time and just hope there may be some pics out there .
To recap if you do know the area....as you went down off of the main Pill road into and out of the village , it led to the turning circle ( bus stop ) and entrance to the hospital . As you entered the hospital grounds the blocks , wards were on your r/h side and looked typically old 1950 / 60 builds.
This is from my memory of visiting when younger and passing many times on the walks up and down the Avon towpath..why oh wwhy did ' nt I take a couple of photographs ?

Thanks again .

Ham Green was a recuperation hospital for a long time.
I remember mum being in those blocks!

Don't think the blocks were of architectural importance?! Being WW2 vintage?
So I don't suppose any photos survived ::)

Yes , my mum was kept in after an op . there in the early 70s and in the days when you were only let out when fit , well and could cope either with or without support , and ' target driven ' was unheard of .
Two grandfathers that died there were both taken post major strokes and one by passing the General and BRI.....mum seems to believe that of the day it was more a mainline local hospital .
Thanks again

Ahhh, Ham Green hospital. I have fond memories of this place; I did my Enrolled Nurse training at Southmead 1984-1986. Most of my placements were at Ham Green which I much preferred. Happy days! Sorry the photographs are such poor quality; they are a view of the lane leading up to the hospital taken from the nurses home, a view from my room in the nurses home looking across to the care of the elderly block, the single storey wards on the road curving round to the care of the elderly block & a view of the nurses home.
