it may also be worth your while checking the ancestry sister site which is free to view - there are quite a few Kowalchuk in Saskatchewan, Manitoba etc listed on family trees.

This information turned up on a document : Kowalchuk, John born 1905 Jan  Ukraine . His wife Matilda Ann nee Thomas born 1908 Nov at  Kronau Sask. daughter of John Thomas & Mary Maier. looks like it says Russia

I hadnt realized that there were so many of that name. BC Death Regs have 45 and 2 Marriages.
