Marriage Lookup - Mottershead/Hulme - Leek - 1818
« on: Saturday 05 April 14 15:24 BST (UK) »
I am looking for the Marriage of James Mottershead (1790-1870) and Mary Hulme (1794-1878).

The only information I have is that they were married on the 13th August 1818 at St Edwards, Leek. I cannot confirm this information. I am not sure from where this information came. I have not been able to find any on-line confirmation.

Their children are:
 - Thomas Mottershead - b 28 Nov 1818, Christened 13 Aug 1819 - Leek
 - Anne & John Mottershead - b 1824, Christened 11 Apr 1824 - Leek
 - Paul Mottershead - b 13 May 1827, Christened 18 May 1827 - Leek
 - Elizabeth Mottershead - b 1833 - London

Thanks You

Richard Mottershead (4th Great Grandson of James Mottershead and Mary Hulme)

The Mottersheads in my tree moved from Staffordshire, into Derby and then settling in the town of Long Eaton on the Derbyshire/Nottinghamshire border.

I believe that my Mottershead family originally came from Macclesfield. I have anecdotal evidence that my family came from Mottershead Farm, which is near a bridge on the Macclesfield Canal, called Bridge number 50 (Mottershead Bridge). I am yet to prove this fact, as I cannot get past James Mottershead.

There are two apparent Mottershead incursions into my families. One of these concerns a Thomas Mottershead born in Sutton Cheshire in c 1840.All my Mottersheads are farmers.

I can't see any evidence of a marriage.  Did James or Mary die in Leek?
There is an online database of burials in Leek Cemetary and there is a James and also a Mary Mottershead on that.  It gives James occupation as silk dyer who lived in Mill Street.  Not sure how that fits in with your family?

Yes, it fits perfectly.

James Mottershead was a Silk Dyer and a Journeyman, and they lived at 1, court no 8, Mill St. One of the their daughters Anne (Matthews) lived at 146 Mill St.

Where is this database?

Hi
here is the link to the burial index if you haven't found it

http://www.staffsmoorlands.gov.uk/sites/default/files/documents/pages/Leek%20Cemetery%20Burial%20Records.xls

it is a xls file so you need to download it it and open it, make sure you move across the page to read it all.

The database gives grave numbers but there is no plan to show which part of the cemetery those grave numbers are.  I think you have to pay a fee to get that information. The cemetery is huge, but if you manage to find out where the graves are located, I'm happy to go and take a photo for you (not sure if you live anywhere near Leek?)

Thanks for the offer, but I would like to visit it, myself. Is there any tips on finding the graves, like a particular number they are ordered?

I have some time off so might spend a little bit of that exploring the cemetery. I also want to visit one in Derby and the Derby Records Office in Matlock.

I live in Nottingham, so it only an hour or so away.
