Warwickshire: Romeo OLIVER
« on: Monday 07 April 14 12:30 BST (UK) »
Romeo OLIVER was born on 15/04/1837 and baptised at St. Phillip, Birmingham, on 06/06/1837.
He was the son of William Blaney OLIVER, a Carpenter, and his wife Elizabeth.

Putting aside his criminal history......he was not transported after his last conviction on 07/01/1853 incidentally.......I can find no reference to him in any Census returns etc.   Can anyone help please.
I use Ancestry as my search vehicle BUT I have doubts if the "new search" is as accurate and comprehensive as the "old"!! :'(

Hello Groom,

I am grateful for the detail and the reference................unfortunately, no matter how many combinations of detail I enter Ancestry REFUSES to produce the 1841 England Census page for the OLIVER grouping you quoted.

I argued last week with Ancestry that the "new search" configuration left a lot to be desired, especially in comparison to the "old search", in that it failed to provide coherent, comprehensive outcomes. I was also in the process of renewing my subscription and as a token of good will Ancestry agreed to discount my subscription by over 30%.   Was that an admission all is not well in the land of Ancestry's "new search"??!!   However, I did promise Ancestry that if in future I encountered difficulties in obtaining accurate details, or obtaining any at all, I would write to their "Support" unit and explain.......and this appears to be a prime example.   Can you please quote the whole SOURCE CITATION as it appears at the bottom of the transcription box for the 1841 England Census entry for me to pass on to Ancestry.

I will let you know how Ancestry responds.

Thank you once again for your help.

Looking at the original I suppose it could be either Oliver or Cliver, however the name immediately above starts with a C, which isn't the same as the first letter of Oliver. I think you need to inform Ancestry of the transcription error.

I cant find him after that though.  ;)

I see he was sentenced to 7 years transportation on 2nd August 1847 for Felony, so I presume if he wasn't transported he was probably in prison somewhere in 1851. He obviously didn't learn his lesson if he was charged again in 1853.  ;D

Found the 1841 "CLIVER"!!!    But then that leads to the pretty obvious after 1841:

"O Romeo, Romeo, wherefore art thou Romeo?"

What Christian names the Oliver family chose for their sons!  Miles Oliver, b 1883 Whitkirk near Leeds, bapt Hook nr Goole, Yorkshire.  Living in Gosford St Coventry close to Cleaver family  1851. Witness to sister Emma's marriage at St. Martin,Bull Ring, Birmingham 1856. (Emma = Charles Cleaver)
See 1851 Coventry Census.
1871 Census 51 Latimer St South Birmingham visitor to John Greasley, Boot & Shoe maker.  Another visitor Emile Paphenus (?) Foundry Moulder born Paris.  Miles' son CROMWELL Oliver born in Birmingham.  The Oliver family seemed to gravitate from Yorkshire down to Brinklow nr Coventry and then were found in Birmingham.  It would be interesting to know if this is the same family.
Miles died 1 Mar 1900 Birmingham.

Any luck with Romeo yet?

He wasn't with his mother in 1851, as it looks as she has remarried and Juliet and William are with her. Daughter and son in law often meant step children.
