Lost - Lawrence Ellis, around Rochester, Kent Born circa 1830?
« on: Wednesday 09 April 14 11:18 BST (UK) »
Help!

Can anyone help me trace Lawrence Ellis?

He may have been a Police Constable in or around Rochester, Kent.

His wife may have re-married someone called 'Hall', and moved to the Marylebone area.

He is only referenced once as Lawrence Ellis, deceased on a marriage certificate 1892 Henley on Thames.  His son was 29 years old.

Son : Walter Thomas Ellis ; born circa 1863 , Medway , Rochester, Kent
Daughter in law : Mary Robinson ; born circa 1863, Berkshire.

Many thanks, Karla

Hello - welcome to Rootschat

I've found Walter in 1871, he is with his grandparents Thomas Ellis born 1812 and Mary born 1822, in Rochester:  RG10  Piece 903  Folio   87  Page 26.

Therefore, if he was telling the truth on his marriage certificate, they must be the parents of Lawrence. I'll see if I can find them in an earlier census.

Who was his wife?

Am wondering if Lawrence was his middle name and he was Thomas Lawrence or something.

I am wondering the same....

I can find no census records for him at all, not even the 1871 you refer to.  What's your secret?

I ordered his death certificate and it stated that he was also known as Walter Thomas Hall.  I  could only find records of a Walter Thomas Hall's birth, not Walter Thomas Ellis in the Rochester, Medway, Borstal area around 1865, and then his marriage in 1892 as Walter Thomas Ellis.

All record of him then seems to have disappeared until 1901 census, when he was with his family in Hartley Wintney.  His wife died in 1909.  In 1911 he may have been with one son Ernest in a lodging house, but again I'm not sure as the data is only a summary.

His first son, Francis Walter George Ellis was born in Cavendish Square, Marylebone, in 1893, and except for the 1901, 1911 censuses, and a 1914 WW1 joining up record his records also seem to disappear.

The whole thing is a mystery, which Walter's grandson (my Dad) never understood.  When my Dad died last year I vowed to unravel it all if I could.

Hope this helps.  Any advice on research would be great.

Best wishes, Karla

Sorry.

I didn't make the last message very clear - Walter Thomas is 'Lawrence's son'.

Lawrence is only mentioned once on Walter's marriage certificate.

??? :)

Strange, I can find Walter on the 1871 on Find My Past, but I cant find it on Ancestry.

They are living in Delce Road, Rochester

Thomas   Ellis   head   59        Shoemaker
Mary           Ellis   wife   49         Laundry
Walter HT  Ellis grandson 5                                                         Rochester
Amy         White dau  23 married  Tailoress wife of mariner            Rochester
John Winder Cornes  son 32     mariner                                       Rochester

I wonder if that means Mary was married previously as there is a son with the surname Cornes?

This looks like John's birth, so perhaps he was illegitimate

John Windeyer Cornes
Baptism     6 May 1838
Saint Margaret, Rochester, Kent, England
Mother:    Mary Cornes

Just found the original image in Cityark - no father given, but address is Delce Lane.  http://www.rootschat.com/links/0yu8/

Hi,

Re 1871 Census on Ancestry

The surname is transcribed as ELLES and the age of wife given as 69.  Place of Birth of Thomas
transcribed as Farnham.

Walter transcribed as Walter H S, but I read this as Walter H J.

This family didn't seem to be very good at registering things - I can't find Walter's birth. That certificate would have given you more information about Lawrence, if he did actually exist.
