Wood, Eccup/Addle - guidance on 1861 Census information please
« on: Friday 11 April 14 21:28 BST (UK) »
I would appreciate some advice regarding the information which has been taken from the 1861 Census for my relative George Wood(who I have posted on previously in searches). I had so far established that he was illegitimate and deduced that his mother must have been Betsy Wood. The information is detailed here: RG 9/3211/81 p 19

However I have just noticed that the census has described him correctly as grandson of the head of the household, but Ancestry I think has also established he is son to one of the children of the head, Stephen.

This information completely changes my family tree so I would appreciate some understanding as to whether this is a clerical error on the part of Ancestry, or whether they have made the correct relationship, please

Thanks

It would appear that Ancestry's assumption has been made because Stephen's name is above George's in the household listing.

Interestingly Betsy's name is above Stephen's

There is no relationship shown between Stephen and George

This is the entry as it appears - bear in mind that all relationships shown are to the head of the household - in this case John.

All the men were blacksmiths

John Wood 54
Ann     56 wife
Thomas     27 son unmarried
Betsy  21 dtr - unmarried
Stephen  19 son unmarried
George  1 grandson
Martha Myeres   8 niece
Joseph Robinson 28 servant

It is quite likely that the grandson was staying over at time of the census while parents were elsewhere.  I would suggest looking in the 1851 census to see what other children Jon and Ann had and follow their lines.  Repeat for 1841 census, however this had less detail on relationships.

Good luck.
