Looking for help on my G.G Grandfather Richard Burnside..Durham
« on: Wednesday 16 April 14 20:24 BST (UK) »
Hello folks, struggling to find any information on my great great grandfather Richard Burnside, born Durham? in approx 1864.  He married his wife Sarah Campbell and thats all I have.... :(   He was apparently an Autioneer at the time of his sons marriage. I can't find Sarah's date of birth or their marriage.  They also had a son called Richard Burnside born 1884 in Chesterly Street Durham who died in Inverness in 1968.  His wife was Elizabeth Mullen born 1883. Elizabeths father Hugh Mullen was a Travelling Showman at the time of their marriage.  Any help would be greatly appreciated.  Thanks  ;)

Hi

The marriage between Richard & Sarah is registered in December Quarter of 1881 at Chester Le Street

That would have made him around 17 when he married Sarah, which is possible, but might need to knock off a few years as he could be a bit older

the actual registration is on freebmd.org.uk, but it won't give you anything more than quarter and place and who.

familysearch also has a lot of information but I can't see the marriage on there for the minute as the transcription could give his father.

you may need to get the marriage certificate from the General Register Office if we can't track him down on here

You might find useful information on freebmd.org.uk in addition to the marriage of Richard and Sarah. The name Richard Burnside crops up in Chester-Le-Street both before and after this event, so you may find both previous and subsequent generations. Good luck.

Hi,
Could he be living in Hamilton, Lanarkshire in 1901/
Possible family living in Quarry Street, Hamilton.
Richard Burnside   46 Coal Miner   England
Sarah    "               36                  England
Children Richard 17, Mark 10, William 7, Annie 3, Bessie 13.

If you think this might be your family , there is a piece in   1900 a local paper reporting a minor disgression of a Richard Burnside, Quarry Street, Hamilton...auctioneer.

That is them in Hamilton in 1901

I've just found the daughter Annie's birth certificate and gives the parents as Richard Burnside and Sarah Campbell, who were in turn married on 31 October 1881.

So Richard Snr was born in 1855 and Sarah in 1865 so that should narrow them down a bit.

Oh my goodness...thank you for all your replies!  My apologies for the spelling of Chester Le Street!  I am pretty certain the the marriage of Richard and Sarah in the last quarter of 1881 are them. I am delighted to find this bit of info, and thanks Ruth for pointing me in the right direction in the first place....! It all sounds about right to me.  Not sure on any coal miners Cathy.....? That would be an interesting spin on things!! It would also make Richards birth year out by about 10 years...?  It would also make Sarah too young at the time of marriage in 1881...?
Last little hopeful question would be.......any chance anyone could possible get me a rough idea of Sarahs age at marriage?
Also, any record of (son) Richard Burnside/Elizabeth Mullen marriage date..?
