Cuddilache - Place in Blackburn Parish????? Any ideas????
« on: Sunday 20 April 14 13:10 BST (UK) »
Hi everyone,

Hoping someone on here can help me. Whilst researching my East Lancs ancestors, I came across the birth registry for Ralph Eddleston:

Baptism: 1 Nov 1729 St James, Church Kirk, Lancashire, England
Ralph Eddlston - Son of Ralph Eddlston
Abode: Cuddilache in the parish of Blackburn
    Register: Baptisms 1633 - 1747, Page 148, Entry 22
    Source: LDS Film 1470822

Anyone got any ideas where Cuddilache could be? Had a quick look at the OSmap on bing but I'm a Preston lad, dont really know Blackburn.

Any help would be greatly appreciated

Ben

Hi,

I am fairly local and know the area quite well, but this one has me totally stumped.  I think you need sight of the actual parish record to check what has been transcribed against the original.

This is an 1786 map of the area - click on the image to enlarge it:

I have got a mental block now, all I can think of is Hoddlesden  ::)

If it wasn`t Easter I would go and check the records myself.

Hi

Not sure where you saw this baptism but it's on the LancsOPC website.

There are several other mentions of this abode (with spelling variations such as Cuddy Laych, Cuddy Laich, Cuddilaich).  They all appear to be for Eddleston baptisms (different Eddleston spellings) at St. James in Church.

Perhaps a house name ?

I have a feeling it disappeared under Rishton Reservoir and I just found this:

See under Rishton Reservoir - it mentions Cuttlache - I know its not Cuddylache, but hmmm.

Hi Mo

I think you're probably right and that Cuttlache is the same place as Cuddilache.

This place/abode certainly seems to have disappeared.  I spotted various spellings of Cuddilache on about 15 records on LancsOPC from 1720s onwards - but nothing after 1800.   Three baptisms included Rishton in the abode - "Cuddy Leich in Rishton", "Cuddileick in Rishton", "Cuddyleach in Rishton".

Apparently, "Laiche" (several spelling variations) has Scottish origins meaning low-lying land so all makes sense.

Thanks Malcolm,

Good to have another opinion and also confirmation that Cuddylache or whatever was in Rishton.  Not very common for a place name/house name to end in Lache etc  in Lancashire.

I have just seen this thread and was interested because I am local to Blackburn and surrounding area and had never heard of Cuddilache -- thank you Mo for your excellent sleuthing!

Malcolm --You may be interested in the pictures on this site --- of the area. I'm not sure if it will work as a link, but here goes;

If it doesn't - try googling 'Rishton Reservoir'
