Who was Joseph Bolton?
« on: Wednesday 23 April 14 11:23 BST (UK) »
H,

Can anybody help in finding this person in 1841 and/or any evidence of his birth/baptism.
His name is:
Joseph Bolton and he was born in Whitstable around 1825.

I can only find him once - on the 1851 census - by which time he has married (possibly to an Elizabeth Boxer during the March quarter of 1845).
On this census Joseph's date of birth is given as 1825 and place of birth is Whitstable.
His wife, Elizabeth, is listed as being 32 years (6 years older than him), and they have two children, Joseph, aged 6 years and Rose Ann, aged one year.
The family are living within the parish of Seasalter and Joseph is a general labourer.
He may have died during the December quarter of 1858 (Canterbury RD), as Elizabeth is listed as a widow by the 1861 census, and was living in Whitstable.
Her year of birth is given as 1820, and as well as Rose Ann, she now also has two younger children; John aged 9 years, and Henry, aged 6 years.
There is also an elder daughter, Eliza, (who was missing from the 1851 census), aged 14 years.
Eliza's baptism may have taken place in Seasalter on the 5th September 1847 - only her mother is named on the baptism online record and his recorded as Elizabeth Boxer or Bolton.

But who was Joseph? As he only appears with any certainty in 1851 census information on him is scarce and I can't find any trace of him prior to this.

Any help would be appreciated

Sue

If you get the birth cert of Rose Ann, it will give mothers maiden name and at least confirm or rule out the Boxer theory.

If that is confirmed, then the marriage cert will tell you his fathers name and occupation( hopefully) and if it was a first marriage.

Then you are back to parish registers so will need to scour prs for Whitstable and surrounding parishes for a  christening of a Joseph Bolton around 1825, with a father of the right name and occupatioin.

A Joseph Bolton was baptised 9 Nov 1831 at Chislet St Mary's which is not far from Whitstable. The parents are given as George and Elizabeth.
Hope this helps

There is a baptism at Whitstable as follows

1823 Sept 7 Joseph s/o John and Maria BOLTON

When Joseph married Elizabeth Boxer on 15 March 1845 at St Mildred's Canterbury she was a widow.  Her father was said to John Stewart a Labourer.  Joseph's father was noted as John and also a Labourer.  The couple were both resident in Wincheap, Canterbury.

Just in case you're interested the Joseph Bolton who died in 1858 (aged 35) was buried at St Gregory's, Canterbury from the County Gaol! ???

Hope this helps,
Tony :)

Following on from Mabel Bagshawe's posting:-

The earlier date is for the Marriage Banns with the Wedding taking place at Chislet on
1817 Oct 14 John Bolton of Hearn (sic) to Maria Boxer of the Parish, both signed by mark.
The witnesses were
Susanna Boxer and John Tapsell
