COMPLETED - 1851 Census - trying to find Wenlock Terrace, Hoxton
« on: Saturday 26 April 14 16:32 BST (UK) »
Wondering if anyone can have better luck than me trying to find 9 Wenlock Terrace, Hoxton (or Shoreditch) on the 1851 Census please?  Just interested in this particular entry, no other information.

I've tried on FindMyPast but they don't show a Wenlock Terrace, only Wenlock Street, Shoreditch, which may be in the same area but the family I'm trying to find don't appear in the results.

There are several baptisms at Hoxton St John either side of 1851 to a William and Mary (Ann) Newbury resident at 9 Wenlock Terrace.  William is born Croydon 1822, a butcher.  Mary's is dead by 1860 as William remarries to Harriet Newbury nee Teague.  I'm trying to confirm if Mary Ann Norton (who married William Newbury in 1842) is born in Enfield.  Their first son was baptised there and her father is Thomas so would tie in with the Mary Ann Norton baptised 1822 to Thomas and Sarah Norton.

However, I can't find a death or burial for Mary Ann.  Some trees link to an 1851 Census entry in Chiswick for a William and Mary Newbury born 1822 Croydon, butcher, but there is no sign of any of their children and at least three of them survive as they appear on later census with William and Harriet.  In any case the Chiswick couple are also there in 1861, so there would appear to be two Robert and Mary Newburys born Croydon.  There are a lot of Newburys in Croydon as it is another family I'm researching but haven't got as far as the 1800s yet. ;D  The known surviving children are Charles (bapt 1843 Enfield), Mary Phoebe (bapt 1845 Finsbury, born Shoreditch on 1861 Census) and Emily (bapt 1850 Hoxton).

I've tried thegenealogist but no luck.  The previous FindMyPast missing census pieces page is still not available on the site as I'm wondering if Wenlock Terrace could be missing.

If anyone can find any sign of them, I'd be grateful.  A reference would do as I can then find it on ancestry.

Any help appreciated.

I don't need any other information on the Enfield Norton family or Williams's family thanks, just looking for this specific family on 1851 Census. ;)

You can see in detail what is missing from the 1851 census at  http://www.rootschat.com/links/0z1t/
By using the same method you can find what is missing in other censuses.

Thanks to Z, have to admit I'd forgotten that you can't now search on references on ancestry new search :(  I'd have had to get my CD set out otherwise but thanks for finding it for me.  Thanks also to Claire.t, as it saved me finding the CD set.

No wonder I couldn't find that piece with both the head of household's first name, surname and place of birth completely indexed incorrectly.  :o :o :o  I'd tried numerous variations without surname and with birthplaces but to no avail. ;)  I wonder what FindMyPast have indexed it as, I'll have to have a look. ;D ;D  I've submitted a transcription error report to ancestry.

Thanks to Rosie and Stan, will have to look at the National Archives pages in future unless FindMyPast reinstate the page they had previously. ::)

Thanks to everyone, my hunch played off and it is the correct Mary Ann Norton so another sideline to follow forward. :D
