1891 look up please - Hawley or Gifford
« on: Friday 24 June 05 20:04 BST (UK) »
Hi,

I am trying to trace Mary Whitaker Welch, who married in 1883 either Carter Hawley or Henry Henderson Gifford. I thought it was Carter Hawley, as he lived round the corner, but in 1901 his wife was Susan, so maybe Mary became Mrs Gifford ?

She was born abt 1860 in Newark, Notts, and I am assuming she will probably still be in the area - I would be grateful if someone could look her up & confirm who she married !!

Thanks,
Cheers,
Chris

Hi Tanja,

Thanks, this is them ! That will teach me to make assumptions - The Hawley family ran a pub in Newark not far from Mary's dad's grocers shop, whereas the only Henry Gifford I could find lived in London, so I couldn't work out how they would have met. Then I looked more closely at the 1881 census, and noticed that Henry was a clerk in the lace trade, and where do they famously make lace ? Nottingham of course !!

I will have to check my London A-Z, but I think Mary's brother had moved to the same area by then too !

Anyway, Thanks again

Cheers,
Chris
