Marriage, Birth records Wigan 1850-1870
« on: Wednesday 30 April 14 23:41 BST (UK) »
Looking for information on Great Grandfather Patrick Joseph O'Brien..... born Wigan about 1861. Father is Michael O'Brien mother is Bridget...we believe Burke but Harney has come up as a possible maiden name.  The census for 1861, 1871, 1881 all have family who we believe is our Patrick's at 40 Victoria St. Wigan.   There is another Michael O'Brien family on 39 Adelaide St. that I think also has a Bridget as spouse.

Our Michael and Bridget were both born in Ireland...so we are trying to figure out what Bridget's maiden name is see if we can find out when they came to Wigan from Ireland and from where in Ireland. My guess is they married in England and most likely Wigan.

Thanks so much ... Bernadette

does this address appear at any time in your research ??... it`s possible there may be 3 Michael O`Brien having children at that time ..
have a look at this site - St John RC church ,Wigan ( scroll down where it says All Saints - then click on St John )

Yes! as a matter of fact there is a third address that has come up and it is Princess St.  Clearly searching for correct Michael O'Brien with a son named Patrick is going to be challenging. I will check the site.  Are there other RC churches that could have records.  I truly believe they were the family on Victoria St. because in 1881 when Patrick was 20 they list him as an grocery assistant. When he immigrated to NYC he owned a grocery store. He married  Mary Elizabeth Segrave in St. Patrick's in Wigan..1884.

Thank you so much ....I will let you know what I find.

There are 4 records with Princess St as abode ...so they will be your O`Brien family - all in St John RC ...I have checked all the other churches in Wigan ...your family are definitely St John church
1st one is the burial I posted before of Michael O`Brien aged 6 weeks
then
Burial: 8 Apr 1856 St John RC, Wigan, Lancashire, England
Edward O'Brien -
    Age: 47 years
    Abode: Princess Street
    Buried by: T. Selby
    Source: Original register at LRO
Burial: 8 Apr 1856 St John RC, Wigan, Lancashire, England
Mary O'Brien -
    Age: 19y.
    Abode: Princess St.
    Buried by: Thomas Leech
    Source: Original register at LRO

2 burials from that street on the same day - looks like father and daughter - BUT ...NOTE the burials ..one by T Selby and one by T Leech ??...very unusual ?...so are they 2 different families - but from the same street ??

Marriage: 6 Aug 1860 St John RC, Wigan, Lancashire, England
Patrick O'Brien - Princess St.
Cath. Hogan -
    Married by: Alfred White

Back then Catholic marriages would be recorded as Register Office or Registrar Attended so it could have been a Church marriage.
