James Moulding - Leicester
« on: Tuesday 06 May 14 23:33 BST (UK) »
Hi

I have spotted a census for a James Moulding, born circa 1832, in 1881 in Leicester St Margarets, although cannot spot him on any earlier or subsequent census.

RG11 Piece: 3170 Folio: 62 Page: 8

He is a bricklayer and is listed with a wife, Elizabeth and daughter Florence.  I cannot spot any Marriages or birth records for either of these also.

Can anyone spot any other information or details associated with this family?  It may help me solve a problem...

Regards

TB

Hi truebrit,

Yes I came only find him on 1881 census too, but if you look at his place of birth I think it says Leicester Hathern? ...... see what you think.

Kind regards

There is a daughter, Florence, age 1 on that census.

But I can't find any mention of Florence in birth records, or any other census?! ???

in the 1881 he is a brick layers assistant. found this in newspapers online:

Accidents.— A bricklayer named James Moulding of Short-street, slipped off the kerb of a pavement on Saturday night, and injured his foot so severely as to necessitate his remaining an in-patient in the Infirmary.
Leicester Chronicle - Saturday 02 November 1878

there are a lot of 'incidents' involving a James Moulding (most concerning assaults!!)in the newspapers. no way of knowing if yours - personally I wouldn't claim him!!

Thank-you for your comments.  I will now share my thoughts.

I think that the James Moulding in the 1881 census is the James Moulding who married Emma Lee in 1863 in Leicester.  That couple had several children between 1863 and 1880, although James is NEVER at home.  Wife Emma eventully moves to Hinckley around 1871 and is found living with her parents in 1871 and 1881.  In 1882, Emma remarries (claiming to be a widow) - perhaps she found out about James' wayward life and his other wife and child.....

I have found a death for a James Moulding in 1910 in Leicester.  He died at the Poor Infirmary, which is possible for the James that i am researching.

The newspaper articles you have found are interesting although again paint the picture of an unreliable jack the lad, which is played out in the circumstances that we find his family in.  But where is he in the census......

Perhaps Florence was registered under her mums maiden name and James and Elizabeth Moulding just stated they were married for the 1881 record.

My James does not list a father on his marriage certificate to Emma, so that is another dead-end as he appears to be illegitimate.  The marriage certificate does however list him as a Journeyman Brickmaker with a birth year of circa 1842.

Any more thoughts or evidence gratefully received.
