Greater and Little Knowle
« on: Friday 09 May 14 21:05 BST (UK) »
How distinct were these two places in 1905?
Would they have each had a church?
Were they parishes with their own living or where they chapels of ease?

I'm doing some research into a question set out in a recent edition of the Toronto Family History Centre. I believe it is solvable but need to know where to look.

Any thoughts would be well received this side of the Atlantic
Happy hunting.

From GenUKI:

BUDLEIGH (EAST) is a straggling village in three parts, called Lower, Middle, and Higher, pleasantly situated near Bicton Park, in the vale of the Otter, about two miles from the sea, 5 miles W.S.W. of Sidmouth, and 10 miles S.E. by E. of Exeter. Its parish contains 2620 acres and 2319 souls, including the hamlets of Great and Little Knowle, about two miles S.S.W. of the pleasant and handsome little town and bathing place of BUDLEIGH SALTERTON, delightfully situated on the sea coast at the mouth of the estuary of the Otter, nearly three miles S. from East Budleigh, and four miles E. by N. of Exmouth. . . . Great and Little Knowle are suburbs of Budleigh-Salterton, and on Park terrace, in the latter hamlet, is a small Baptist Chapel, built in 1844, by subscription.

Thank you for the GenUK info, that suggests chapels of ease if there were churches at all. Another webpage also suggested that they might be chapels of ease and that they were administered from Crediton. We are always advised to start with the most likely and then work outwards if we don't find what we seek.

Thank you for looking that out.
