Campbell
« on: Saturday 10 May 14 05:44 BST (UK) »
Hope this is the right place to post this 😃 I'm looking for info on my great grandfather's family. His name is John Campbell born Mar 17, 1874 at Barvas, Isle of Lewis. His parents are William Campbell & Mary (Macleod) married Nov 29, 1866 at Barvas Isle of Lewis. I think John's siblings are Barbara ?b. 1868),Donald (b. 1872), Alexander (b. 1877), Norman (b. 1879?), Murdoch (b. Sept 7. 1881 married Christina Macleod) Allan (b. July 12, 1884 or 1888), Roderick (b. Mar 3, 1888) does anyone have any info to share

Hi Norma Jean.

It would be best to move this post to Scotland board, but I don't know which county it would come under.

Looks like Lewis comes under Ross & Cromarty?
Possible, part of Lewis under Inverness-shire.

Thank you!
I don't think those children match up with this Campbell family. I have saved the info though and will keep digging. 😃

Hi Norma Jean.
I think there may have been some confusion and I got ahead of myself. The census I posted was for the father William Campbell married to Mary Mcleod before his marriage. So Lets start again.

 1901 no 5 Arnol Barvas
Mary Campbell 54 born Crofter's mother born  Barvas
Donald 28 crofter  born Arnol Barvas
Effie 25 wife of Donald Arnos Barvas
Allan 17
Roderick 13
Alexander Mcleod crofter's grandfather Arnol Barvas (the transcript I have has age 37 but that's obviously wrong).

The family in 1891 at no 46 Arnol Barvas
Mary 42 crofter
Donald 19
Alexander 14
Norman 12
Murdo 10
Allan 6
Roderick 3

1881 census for John Campbell living with his parents William and Mary
Barvas Rosshire
William Campbell 36 Crofter born Barvas
Mary 35 wife born Barvas
Barbra 13 daughter born Barvas
sons all born Barvas.
Donald 9,scholar
John 7  scholar
Alexander 4
Norman 2

10 years earlier at Arnol 1871
William Campbell 26 crofter   all born Barvas
Mary  24
Barbra 2

There are enlistment papers in the Canadian Army WWI records for Murdock,Allan and Roderick all naming mother Mary as next of kin  who still lives at Arnol.
So it looks like some of the brothers went to Canada

And having another look for William born 1845 ish at Barvas I thin k you're right and I've got the wrong family.
Sorry.

Oh my goodness.....thank you!! 😃
Yes, the 1871, 1881, 1891, 1901 census information looks like my family!! That is wonderful! I don't have alot to go on, but that matches what I do have. I did find information that Allan died at Vimey Ridge & is buried in France. I found that Roderick did enlist but nothing after that. I couldn't find anything about Donald or Norman. Allan is on a 1940 US Census in Virginia, married to Johnina & daughter Alena. My G-Grandfather John & Murdo came to Canada. Did you see anywhere about Barbra passing (possibly at 18 years old) or William's passing as it appears he passed between the 1881-1891 census?

I don't know William or Mary's parents or siblings' names. Exciting 😃

Sorry, I may have gotten ahead if myself....trying to process & keep the generations straight. Do you think the 1861 census where you found William - age 16 & parents being Murdoch & Margaret, is my William Campbell?

Good Morning
First can I say I'm happy to help but I do have a couple of limitations.
1) Most of the stuff you need is on Scots People -a government website with bmd for Scotland which you have to pay for.Civil Registration started in 1855 so  most of the stuff will be there but I can't access it without paying.
2)  Because I'm using the transcripts elsewhere I can't look up any deaths-so sorry I can't find Barbra or William's passing.
I'd be buying William Campbell and Mary MacCleod's marriage certificate if I were you and that should provide their parents names.

But in the meantime...
