Immigration - Fanny GUIVER
« on: Wednesday 21 May 14 13:50 BST (UK) »
Hi,
I wonder if anyone can help me. I have hit a brick wall with finding how my mothers 2nd great grandmother Fanny GUIVER arrived in Australia.

So far I've found out Fanny Guiver, born 1841 Hertforshire England died 28/11/1915 New Lambton NSW Australia.
Married 1) Joel Wright 1861 Newcastle NSW, 2) John Williams 1878 Lambton NSW

I've searched assisted, unassisted, convicts - just can't get a hint.

Any help or tips would be greatly appreciated

Cheers Sandra

Do you know if she came by herself or with relatives?  Sometimes you can narrow down the options by looking for siblings/parents/etc and seeing if there's any trace of where/when they arrived.

"Guiver" also seems like a name that could be easily mistranscribed (Quiver?)

Does her death certificate say how long she had been in NSW or if she had lived in another State? Could be worth checking Qld and Vic for arrivals.

Have you checked for an obituary? They can sometimes give details of when a person arrived in Australia.

I don't know how you have searched but some records can be vague eg 'Mr Smith and family', or give initials rather than full names.

Agree with jorose about the surname - a prime candidate for mistranscription/error.

Hi Sandra, Welcome to Rootschat :)
May I ask, from what records are you getting her place of birth and age?... marriage? death?
This is a long shot, (may also need to consider other variations GUYVER)
Ship 'Lady Macdonald', from Plymouth 15 Dec 1854, arrived Port Adelaide, South Australia 7 Apr 1855
Govier, Fanny, age 23, Servant, residence- Somerset

Going off "Hertfordshire" and her mother being Sarah on the death index but no father listed, another possibility:

Fanny Guiver b. 1844 (June quarter), Royston.
Sarah Guiver m. April 1854 to John Bunyan

http://www.records.nsw.gov.au/state-archives/guides-and-finding-aids/nrs-lists/nrs-5316
On the    Plantagenet, arrived July 1854 into NSW, there are (listed as from Barkway, Herts)
John Bunyan, aged 27,
Sarah, aged 30
Fanny, aged 9

This would make her a bit younger than expected - but perhaps she put her age up when marrying in 1861?

Thank you everyone for all your kind help.

I have the death cert of Joel Wright (attached) - Fanny's 1st marriage which lists Fanny as wife and place of marriage as Newcastle NSW.
I then confirmed this at NSW BDM - 2443/1861

Fanny Wright then married John Williams (BDM 4175/1878)

Her death details have been taken from:
Newcastle Morning Herald and Miners' Advocate (NSW : 1876 - 1954) , Tuesday 30 November 1915, page 6
Newcastle Morning Herald and Miners' Advocate (NSW : 1876 - 1954) , Thursday 28 November 1918, page 4

When I search I usually try name variations Gwyver, Giver, Gulver etc.

Thanks again everyone for helping me, I really appreciate it

Hi Sandi,

Fanny's marriage certificates would be of the most use to you, do you have those?

I think that Jorose has hit the nail on the head.  When John and Sarah BUNYAN immigrated Sarah states that she was a native of Barkway, Hertfordshire and that her parents were James and Susan GYVER.

The 1851 census shows Fanny living with her aunt Esther GODFREY in Newsells village, and Sarah is a servant in a house in the same village.  Sarah and Esther were the daughters of Jeremiah James and Susannah GUIVER.

Debra  :)
