I live in Dallas, Texas, USA. My mom is a Bayliss and we can trace her family back to Benjamin Bayliss who married Mary Trimnell: 1798 29 MayAge: 21 (Many US sources say Mary Turnbull or Tramble or Trimble)
Holy Trinity,Stratford On Avon,Warwick,EnglandVicar, James Davenport29 May 1798 Benjamin Baylis, Bachelor, and Mary Trimnell, Spinster, both of this par., by Banns, by James Davenport, Vicar. In pres. of Henry Lathum, Wm Edmonds. Mariages. (Marriage) Warwick: Stratford On Avon - Parish Registers
Father of Benjamin we believe is Thomas.  :-\Thomas had 4 sons, and we know Benjamin came to US.  3 other sons: William, Samuel & Thomas.  Bayliss(Baylis) appears to be very common name in England, and even though I have subscription to World Ancestry.com it's just so common of a last name I'm lost in all of them.  They supposedly came from Stratford on Avon, and I posted marriage info for Benjamin, which would be my great grandfather x about 7 I think!  I believe Stratford on Avon is in Warwickshire, so assume the Thomas Bayliss I seek is from this area.  ::)  Would appreciate any further info anybody may have on this line!  I believe "Cornish" is also associated with this area, and that is such a coincidence as the family ended up in Cornish, New Hampshire (NE US).  Would appreciate any further info on this line as I believe I should be on this  (Warwickshire) Board. If I am mistaken, please forgive my yankee ignorance and please point me in the right direction : ).    Thank you most kindly!    texasflower76021

Hello and a warm welcome to Rootschat  :)

I believe Stratford on Avon is in Warwickshire

It certainly is http://www.genuki.org.uk/big/eng/WAR/StratfordonAvon/

Holy Trinity,Stratford On Avon,Warwick,England
29 May 1798 Benjamin Baylis, Bachelor, and Mary Trimnell, Spinster,
both of this par., by Banns, by James Davenport, Vicar.

Parish Registers

Father of Benjamin we believe is Thomas:-\

Thomas had 4 sons, and we know Benjamin came to US.

3 other sons: William, Samuel & Thomas.  Bayliss(Baylis)

Why do you believe his father is named Thomas?

I see from the Philadelphia Passenger Lists, 1800-1948 Benjamin & family
Arrived Port of Philadelphia on the 23 Jul 1819 aboard Islington

Benjamin Bayliss age 42 (1777) occ Tailor, Mary 43
Elizabeth 20, Mary 17, Jane 9 Samuel 7 & Harriet 3

Not seeing a baptism on Ancestry with father named Thomas but there is this entry from
England, Select Births and Christenings, 1538-1975 from Ancestry for a Benjamin
that was baptised in same Church

Benjamin Bayliss Baptism 1777
Baptism Place:   Holy Trinity, Stratford On Avon,Warwick,
Father: John Bayliss
there's baptisms for
Mary 1773, William 1775, Samuel 1783 same place same father's name

there's also a baptism for a
Mary Trimnel at Holy Trinity 5 Jun 1774 father John

Hopefully someone may have other parish records for Warwickshire and can check for you

Hi,

The following is a connection to some registers from Stratford upon Avon, most are early
but if you look at Volume 6 - this may help.  The others may be of assistance when you
get further back:-

Any problems searching these - please come back.

Hi,

Have attached documents which I think confirm that your Benjamin was a Tailor from Stratford.

These can be found on:-

Hope the attachment works!

Oh my goodness, I love you all!!!  : )
Thank you so very much for pointing me in the right direction(s)!  Our basis for believing Thomas was father is simply a family history written up and published in US book, from a much later descendant.  Obviously, census and baptism records are "proof" vs. oral history written generations later.
So,  Trish, you believe Benjamin's father was John Bayliss?  Interesting.  Based on baptism records at same church.  That was my grandfather's name, his father's name and my uncle's name.   They were rather fond of that, I guess!!

Spendlove - thank you so much for other links!  I may spend all day researching this and so many other things to do!  No idea how to insert all these happy faces that are supposedly active above this screen, but they will not insert.  Otherwise, I'd have 5000 happy faces for you all!  Thank you so very very much.  Oh, I have to  call my mom!  : )

Hi there
I have a hand written family tree ( done by my great aunt) which has a Benjamin Baylis b1777 as being one of 13 children born to Elizabeth nee SMITH and Joseph BAYLIS. His siblings were William b1774 d.1796, Ann b. 1779, Thomas b. 1780, Samuel b. 1783, Elizabeth b. 1786, John b. 1788, Mary b. 1789, John b. 1791, Maria b.1793 d. 1870, Timothy b. 1795, Joseph ( my line) b. 1797 d. 1854 married 1821 Mary Ann BRANSBY, and William b. 1800.
Elizabeth the mother was the daughter of a Timothy and Dorothy Smith.
If you think this is the right family let me know and I will dig out my file and see if I have any other info.
Best wishes
Nikki

I'm seeing this thread many years later in 2024!  I am a Bayliss, descended from Banjamin B by way of his son Samuel, then another Benjamin and Donald.  All of this is really interesting, confirming info that i've assembled in Ancestry.com.  My burning question is this:  What was Benjamin B Bayliss's middle name?  Thanks to anybody who is still watching this thread!

Welcome to Rootschat Martha-B

I'm not sure what your question is?

Do you have some documentation where Benjamin is Benjamin B Baylis?

Trish :)
