Combe St Nicholas Parish records COAT/COATE and NORTH
« on: Thursday 22 May 14 15:07 BST (UK) »
Hello
I am looking for BMDs for some of my family members from Combe St Nicholas, I have approximate birth years from Census returns, but very little else. The information I am looking for is as follows:

John COAT(E) born Combe c.1801, married someone called Eve c.1835, who was born in Curland c.1813, so they may possibly have got married there, rather than at Combe? John died in 1864 and Eve in 1867. I am looking for John's baptism, John and Eve's marriage, which would give me Eve's maiden name, and also burial records for them.

John and Eve had five children that I know of - Elizabeth (b. c.1836), Henry (b. c.1838), Jane (b. c.1842), Susan (b. c.1847) and Amelia Eve (b. c.1850), they may have had more who died in infancy?
I am looking in particular for Jane's baptism, and her marriage to Edmund (also could be Edward or Edwin, I have all these variants from various transcriptions) NORTH c.1860. Also baptism of a Louisa NORTH c.1861 (daughter of Edmund and Jane), and burial of Jane NORTH c.1863, and burial of Edmund NORTH between 1861 and 1871.
Thank you very much for reading this, and for any help that you may be able to offer.

Hi Mand

Burial
[ - ] Nov 1864   John COATE of Halterway aged 64 Ceremony performed by Hans F Hamilton Vicar
No. 307

There is no record of a burial for Eve COAT[E] aged 53 in the CSN Register in the June Quarter 1867 but there is ‘Ann’ COATE - 26 May 1867 - aged 53 years for whom there is no GRO reference.

Marriages

No. 210          Witnesses:  [1st illegible];  Mary COATE (x)
[GRO Index surname FUPING – PR has the first letter formed  ‘F’ as in Vicar’s signature but if I screw my eyes at it I can see PEEPING!!.]

I may have solved the mystery of the surname:  see Census 1911 Susan PIPPIN born Combe St Nicholas; and Census 1871 Susan PIPPEN born Chard [often recorded by CSN folk when elsewhere].

Early marriages of COAT variants at CSN:
05 Dec 1799  Henry COAT (sgd)    both otp
by Banns       Mary BAULCH (x)
No 68            Witnesses:  William BAULCH (sgd);  Sam PYKE (sgd)

No. [blank]        Witnesses:  William BAULCH (sgd);  Sam PYKE (sgd)

Baptisms
25 Jul 1802  John, Son of Mary & Henry COAT
25 Jul 1802   William, Son of Henry & Ann COAT

That should keep you occupied for a while! ;D

John & Eve had more children than you've listed, but they are recorded variously COATE or COAT, so I will need to amalgamate them and ensure I attribute the correct surname spelling for each.

I'll leave the NORTHs for another day!

Wow! Thank you so much dee-jay for taking the trouble to get all this info for me. I can see I'll be busy over the weekend fitting it all into my tree.
There seems no rhyme or reason for the various spellings of Coat - I have another family in my tree, which I think may also have some connections to Combe (not got that far with them yet!) but are mainly from Chardstock, whose surname is variously spelt Row or Rowe and it gets a bit complicated sorting out which ones are 'mine' as it's quite a common name. Hopefully Coat(e) is a bit less common?
Thanks again, you've helped me make some progress now with one of my brickwalls ;D and I'll be really grateful for any other records which you can find.
Cheers

Bearing in mind the CSN 1867 burial recorded 'Ann' [but likely Eve], could the following be siblings of those above, or do you know if John junr married an Ann and had issue?

No 755 10 May 1857   John COAT   son of John & Ann of Weston Farm - Lab’r [Chard 2Q 1857?]
No 821 16 Jan 1859   Henry COAT   son   ditto        of Combe Hill -    Lab’r  [Chard 4Q 1858?]

Now for the CSN NORTH queries:
Baptism
No 906  04 Aug 1861   Louisa NORTH   dau of Edmund & Jane of Combe   Labourer

Burials
No 264 28 Jun 1863   Jane NORTH   22 years   Halterway
No 296 08 Sep 1864   Edward NORTH   27 yrs   Combe St Nicholas [GRO index also Edward]

I know the local press were not renowned for accuracy, but at least they received a mention:

Taunton Courier, and Western Advertiser - Wednesday 24 April 1861   MARRIAGES
April 7, at the parish church, Combe St. Nicholas, by the Rev. F. L. Moysey, vicar, Mr. E. North, to Miss Jane Coat.

Western Gazette - Saturday 11 July 1863   DEATHS
June 23, at Alterhay, Combe St. Nicholas, Miss [sic] Jane North, aged 21.

Happy hunting!

EVE Newton Baptised 09 April 1815, All Saints, Curland, Somerset
Mother MARY Newton, Spinster

Possible MARY Newton Baptised same Church, 10 Sept 1797 to WILLIAM/MARY
They also had a Son NICHOLAS Baptised 24 Jan 1813 (birth 24 Aug 1812) Fathers Occp Labourer. on that
He may have been the Witness at the 1834 Marriage of Eve and John Coate.
(he would be Eves Uncle)
This is all on FreeREG.
Unfortunately it is not working properly at present so cant add any more to confirm what I have found.

1841 Census has a MARY Newton age 70 (birth c 1771) living in Curland. She is a Pauper.

Ah, FreeREG working a little again;

Burials;
WILLIAM Newton, Dec 1840 age 74
MARY Newton, 29 July 1849 age 79

Love the transcription of the 1841 for them!
John Boat,   60  (image 40)
Eve Boat, 25
Mary Boat,   13
John Boat,   6***
Elizabeth Boat, 5

EDIT;
Other possible Children to WILLIAM/MARY Newton;
SIMON, 24 May 1795
MARY 1797 as stated earlier*****
MERIAM, 02 Feb 1800

Thanks Trish, more info to add. The 1841 Census had John 'Boat' as a bit of a sugar daddy then, and Eve as a child bride ::)
I couldn't find them on the 1841, now I know why ???
I looked on FreeReg but couldn't find anything. Mind you, I didn't know Eve's maiden name so wouldn't have found the Newtons.
I'm always amazed at how RootsChatters find all this info, I try and look in the right places but somehow things seem to elude me ???
Must try harder!!
Cheers

FindMyPast had them as COAT in 1841, so I found them with ease and submitted corrections to A.....try which have yet to be accepted.  I do have the advantage of microfiche copies of the PRs as CSN is one of my favourite parishes .....  ;D

I decided to give one last shot at John COAT junr as I'd previously made a note of this GRO marriage reference, just in case:

Jun 1856   COAT, John  / SUMMERHAYES, Ann    Wellington Som  5c 582

and found this in the 1856 CSN Banns:

John COAT Bachelor of this parish
and Ann SUMMERHAYES Spinster of Clayhidon, Devon.
1st Time, Sunday, May 25;  2nd Time, Sunday, June 1;  3rd Time, Sunday, June 8.

Beneath, there is a barely legible note 'Married at Clayhidon' [undated], which at that time came under the auspices of Wellington Reg'n District.
