Looking for my Irish Ancestors
« on: Saturday 25 June 05 23:48 BST (UK) »
Hi, Hope someone can help me. I am searching for two sets of Irish gt gt grandparents.
I have traced them up to the birth of their children here in England. Both sets just said that they came from Ireland. No mention of a county. Is it possible to find out where they were from. Marriage.. births.        Their names are Michael and Emily Doyle ( nee Hurley )
Last heard of in Cheshire England in 1861 1871 and 1881 Michael and 1861 Emily and Patrick a son Born in Liverpool 1848. Another son Michael George born in 1850 in Longton Staffordshire was found on the 1861 in Cheshire and then the 1881 census in Haslingden Lancashire where he then lived with my gt grandmother Agnes. Agnes was born in Hull Yorkshire in 1849 to Charles and Ann Maguire ( nee Kelly ) There is no sign of them since 1849 or even before. Again they just said ( on Agnes's birth reg at the church ) Ireland no County. So can someone Help please

Hi,

You have a couple of things to try.

1 Check for all members of the family born in Ireland on all censuses (check scans of the originals, not just the transcrtipions) in case one census taker noted the county or townland.

2. Check for other possible members of the family with the same surnames who emigrated to the same area at the same time and try and trace their county or townland the same way.

3. There was a third when i started typing this but my mind's gone. Sorry! Anyone?

Hi Kate thanks for replying.  Both couples just said they were from Ireland Can't find the Maguires on any census after their daughter was born in 1849 by the time of the census in Hull in 1851 they had moved. The Doyles just said they were from Ireland too. I just don't know what to do. Theresa

Hi , I have had a little news regarding one of my Irish Ancestors. Michael Doyle Born 1816 in a place called Edendely. Rigo Count. Ireland.
I don't think there is such a place, but with an Irish accent in Lancashire and probably poor Michael couldn't read and write. The enumerator just wrote how he or she heard it. Can anyone fathom it out?. This Michael was married to Emily Hurley, born probably the same place as him. Can anyone help? Thanks

Hi,

Perhaps Edederry or Co Sligo? Try different combinations on the townlands index at http://www.thecore.com/seanruad/

Hi Kate many thanks for your suggestions. Do you know of a place in Sligo where they keep Roman Catholic records of Birth Marriages and Deaths before 1837. Perhaps at the main Cathederal nearby? Thanks Theresa :)

Hi,

Check my website for details. Births were only registered in Ireland post 1864. Before that you have to go to parish records. Many survive, some on film at your local family history centre, more at the National Library in Dublin. Many parishes keep copies locally too. Some county heritage centres have  the records and will check them as a paid service. The level of services varies wildly from centre to centre. I haven't heard anything about Sligo.
