Have just found this website, which I feel would be really helpful for anyone researching Gainford, County Durham;

On it you will find copies of all the Census returns ( including 1901 ! ), photographs, an index of all the gravestones in Gainford and a variety of other resources.

It is free and I have contacted the history society and they are happy for anyone to access it.
