Firstly, I would look for John in other censuses in case a place in Scotland is given for his birth.

Looking at Scotlands People there are 135 John Thom*sons born between Jan 1815 and Dec 1817 in the whole of Scotland.

Adding the father's name James Thom*son cuts it back to a more manageable 19 results on one page, which only costs one credit to view so quite inexpensive.

Looking at the results of the search, you will probably be able to dismiss some of them as their births may be a little too early or too late to be your John.

If you purchased the marriage certificate between John and Isabella, you will get James's occupation which should help you work narrow down which is the likely John with father James.

You might end up buying some incorrect records though. Others may have suggestions for a way to avoid this ...  :-\

Added:
I think John may have died before 1871 as Isabella is a widow.  :(

What is the date of John's marriage to Isabella? Were they married before the 1841 census? (I can't easily see John in 1841 in Northumberland, though I have only had a quick look  :))

I can see a possible Isabella Maughan in 1841 in Newcastle but unsure if it she is your Isabella ... (need to know date of marriage).

Oddly next door to this Isabella there is a 'family' (ie selection of 25 year old women  :-\) with a Margt Thompson age 25 servt not b Northumberland, and a 6 year old George who I wonder if is her illegitimate son?

And, there are other Isabella Maughans in 1841 who may be yours .... This one just jumped out at me.  :)

Jumping ahead of myself here. I'd better will wait for your reply to date of marriage before I continue on very likely the wrong trail ...  ;D
