Where does he belong? COMPLETED
« on: Tuesday 10 June 14 22:04 BST (UK) »
Good morning all

I'm looking for some help with identifying the place and time that this chap served - the thought in the family is that this photo was taken about 1930 (no proof of this) and that he served in the NZ forces.  Maybe someone is clever enough to identify his uniform?  The chap in the background has interesting attire too and may possibly be a clue?

Cheers

Hi Debnz,

The officer in the foreground wears Staff tabs on his lapels so is likely a member of the General Staff, perhaps visiting the front lines on inspection.

The man in the background (likely also an officer) wears the uniform of a Scottish regiment. His trousers might be is tartan (you can just discern the lines between the colours) although his jacket would be khaki-coloured.

I would date the uniform to World War I or later.

Can you provide some biographical information about the individual in the photograph, please? This would help enormously.

And you might get more helpful replies on the Armed Forces Board. Would you like me to move it over?

Hi Suzy,

I don't think so. This was common uniform for senior officers. And that stick is either a walking stick or swagger stick. And the cap badge, though indistinct, is likely to be that for General Officers.

The answer lies in his identity and professional military career.

Hi Spades

The problem is that we don't know who or where this guy is.  Someone thinks the photo was taken in Rotorua....no idea why that would be!  He appears in a family photo album and we have no name....nothing!

Yes, please move it over to the Armed Forces board if you think that will get better results.  Thanks Spades!

Cheers

The chap at the back looks to be wearing a Scots Guards glengarry hat with the read and white dice around it

Could the gentleman in the front be Sir Charles Fergusson who was Governor General

That is what I was wondering Janette.   As soon as I saw him in the photo, I thought he looked familiar, as I have a photo of him in my collection somewhere, not the same photo though.

You guys are INCREDIBLE.  And, looking at other photos on papers past etc, you seem to be absolutely correct!

Many thanks for all your help.
