Help needed with a census scrawl pls
« on: Wednesday 11 June 14 16:21 BST (UK) »
Could someone please see if they can make out what on earth the last few words say?  The risers and descenders of the two words are tangled up.  I don't usually have trouble with writing but this one has me and an e-contact beat

I thought at first "laundry worker" but not so sure on reflection - I can't see an "a" in the first word

Seems odd to be Laundry worker when it says of private means .   I think it is more likely to be a place.
The "London, parish not known" refers to her place of birth and seems to be in a different hand.   She has obviously had help filling the form in and some is written in green ink.   The London bit looks as if it has been over written.

Thank you for having a look.  Given Caroline has spelled "Born" with a "P" and husband looks like "hisbord" I'm not too surprised there doesn't appear to be an "a" in "laundry" but it does fit so could be what she intended.

I wondered it if had anything to do with "Means".

The green ink 370 is the code for Private Means and will have been added by the clerk in the census office categorising occupations.

Thank you for having a look.  That's two votes for laundry worker.  It's quite possible she didn't know her or her children's parishes of birth.  Her husband probably completed most of the earlier schedules but he'd died between this and the previous census.

Thank you for having a look.

Caroline was born  in London and married twice in London but she did stray down into what was then Surrey for a time.  It's where the first of her children was born.  The rest were born in London.
