The army records also show that his grandfather was William, to whom his medals were sent, implying that his father had died in the meantime - there's the death of a William Evans age 42 in the Sep quarter 1903 in Ampthill registration district which includes Toddington.

The army records are on Ancestry.

He could have made up everything, but I prefer his army records to the 1891 census.

I have so much to learn and understand as I cannot see that info re hid military record on ancestry. I can see an FW a Evans dying on 15 February 1902.

The William who died in 1903 was born 1861 so if Frederick was b 1877 and William was his father - William would only have been 15/16yrs old when Frederick was born

In 1871 - Grandparents William & Mary Ann did not have  a son called William

On Ancestry, tick the Match all terms exactly box at the top; enter Frederick William Evans and Bedfordshire. I get 1248 hits. In the Military category there are 2 hits. One of them is your Frederick William Evans. There are 19 pages of his military records, most of them are duplicated, all are damaged. One of them is a note querying his date of death. Unit records show it as 14 Feb 1902, War Office records show 15 Feb 1902. The unit confirmed it as 14 Feb. He died at Lydenburg of peritonitis.

His medical examination on 13 Mar 1896 gave his age as 18 yrs 2 mths

Bedfordshire Boy that is great, thanks for all your help.

Going to see if I can find him in 1881 and who was his dad / mum.

Will also do some research as to what action his regiment saw in the Boar War and any information on his death.

He listed his job as baker - that us what my family ultimately became, so he potentially is the first, I wonder who for and where?

This is whist I love about family history, the story continues.....
