Sadly your Nan's story is all to common, it is very hard to get information on the mothers. Some of the convents/hospitals go down the road of refusing to release mothers private information even though they are long passed away.
On a recent TV program a woman in your Gran's position knew her mother's name and only need her mother's birth date to figure out which woman of that name was hers but even the professional researchers couldn't persuade the hospital to give it to her.
Demands are being made to pass legislation to release all such records.

Have a look at that site it has a lot of information on how to search.

I have lots of information from my nanny
My nan was called Mary Margaret Clare born 19th August 1932
Her name was changed to Margaret Mary Clare .
My nanny said her mother who died (from what we are told ) was called Margaret Mary Clare .
Her aunty who took her in from Rotunda hospital was called Mary Margaret Clare but married Larrie Farrell so became Mary Margaret Farrell . Larrie died before my nan was born .
Larrie Farrell died leaving Mary Farrell a widow with her 3 children called
Kathlyn Farrell who died aged around 24yrs
Thomas Farrell who died aged around 28yrs
Mary Farrell .
My Nan's mum who died had 3 brothers
William Clare who died young.(we think)
Tom Clare and Michael Clare who both moved to Birmingham to work on British railway .
The man who my nan thinks is her dad is called John White he married Essie Farrell who was Larries sister.
They had 4 children
Mary white
Katie white
Annie white
John White
John White lived at liberty house
My nan lived with Mary Farrell and children at brackens cottage Waterford ts or garna lane/street
She was christening at the church on Shaun McDermott st called our lady of lords
Her god parents were thomas Clare her uncle and his wife Eva Clare .
This is where her birth certificate is from the church . It's not a birth certificate it's just to show who she is ..
I really hope I can find something with this information :)
Or I'm pointed in the right direction

This makes it seem even stranger that a widow with 3 children would take on a baby. I wonder whether your nan was Mary Farrell's child, born from a liaison she had with John White ie her brother in law, after Larrie died? The story could have been made up to cover up the scandal this would have caused.

How old was Kathlyn when your grandmother was born?

Well i am starting to think that about john white and the aunty the more I hear about it . Kathlyn was 13-16 yrs my nanny isn't sure but there is a chance she could be the mum . But if we could rule out the convent and the mother there we could go down that route .
