In 1901 Jane is on her own with children without him so maybe they took breaks from each other!

Have you found all the other children in 1911?

Yes more people than that lived in one room.

When was she born? There is a death for a Jane Wickert age 59 in 1911 in Romford, but that is Q3 so it would not explain why she was not with the family on the census. Perhaps she was ill and was hospitalised or institutionalised at the time of the census.

The 1891 census gives her birth as about 1850 Devon-St Georges . In fact the most likely birth record is Sept 1849, Jane Rosina Trout St Thomas which is part of Exeter.
Phillip was born in Germany about 1848 and was a journeyman baker, so presumably was working away in 1901, 1911 as well as in 1881 where Jane is again on her own with the children.
The death that craclyn found would certainly fit, but there is another death in Islington in 1925 aged 74 that also fits.

Thankyou all for your replies l have all of your information and l did find missing census of Phillip all with mispelt surname he was working as a baker so l suppose it was night work so not on census with Jane but at work. Jane was born Devon and died 1925 so even if all three lived in one room where was she ,  but l have checked all children and the ones l can find in 1911 she is not with them, maybe its going to stay a mystery.
Thankyou

Residents of hospitals and institutions were often listed on censuses with initials only.  It is of course also possible that she usually stayed with them but was travelling to visit other relatives on the night the census was taken and managed to get missed off.

Here's some historical background on where they lived:

On the south side of Chapel Street, poor housing filled gaps, just as it did off White Lion Street. There were several courts east of Suffolk (Baron) Street: East Place and West Place on Hague's take, and Emmen's Buildings, leading into James's Gardens. East Place was built up with houses in the late 1790s, West Place (which survives as Northwest Place) in the early 1800s, Emmen's Buildings and James's Gardens later, in the 1810s and 20s.

Chapel Street is now Chapel Market; you can see the area on Booth's poverty maps here:

Presumably "West Place" is one of the three small roads, unnamed, running south from Chapel Street, east of the intersection with Suffolk, as described above.

Any chance that she was politically minded? Some suffragettes boycotted the 1911 census as they felt that if they did not have the right to vote then they should not be included in a census count.

Probably not so likely having just read the last post on the area they lived in though :)

If you have access to findmypast try a search on Jane Wickett. There is a patient in an instution in Islington that could be a possibility. Showing birth as 1848 but age was unclear on image. Birthplace wrong too but look at the line above. Could have been a switch of info.
