Can anyone shed light on this photo please?
« on: Friday 27 June 14 22:40 BST (UK) »
What are the two sticks held, and what is the contraption at the feet of the bloke in the middle of the front row?  Are the blokes with headphones on ...radio operators?  Any help appreciated :)

The flash on the arm of the airman standing with headphones in centre shows that he is a wireless operator.   The sticks look like slide rules and if the building is a meteorological office then they may have been used on weather maps.   The uniforms are post 1918 as is the rank of LAC.

When I was young I was given a morse code tapper thingy which had been used by an army telegraphist.

There's a small photo at the bottom of this page which shows an army telegraph office

Trini, are you able to rescan or enhance the 'certificate' or whatever it is, by the feet of the man on the left. It looks significant as it is proudly displayed, and whatever is written on it may give some clues.

Great photo. What a happy bunch they are. :)

Joy, I was thinking the same thing, and was just looking for it!!! Great Minds and all that :P

http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php?topic=287542.0

and the parallel discussion over on rafcommands (which is where I originally saw the thread)

http://www.rafcommands.com/forum/showthread.php?991-1920s-Meteorological-Section-photo

I remember it being one of the most interesting bits of collective research on here and there
