Have you given anymore thought to ordering his WW2 Navy service record?

Perhaps these records might give a clue?

I'm not sure if Herbert's death record will give his dob, that may help find his correct birth entry

No, not considered his naval records.
Did someone say that they are free to dependants or next of kin?
Now that I have a firm death date I could order his death certificate, yes.

and as posted previously the only Surgeons I could find on 1911 using free search were

Yes, as I said before, I don't think it was ever going to be Trevor Holliday as the father; that was a tissue of lies to cover up the bastardy. I'd bet quids though that the father WAS a Trevor ...

S-d is insistent that his granny never married and was BORN a Holliday, but this is just such a tangled web!

Is it possible that the father's surname could be Trevor?   :-\

There are quite a few Holliday's cremated there - here's one named Margaret

Margaret Holliday Age   66
Birth year   1886
Death date   3 Feb 1952
Cremation year   1952
Cremation date   6 Feb 1952
Crematorium   Cottingley Crematorium
Register reference   3713
Record set   Yorkshire, Leeds, cremations 1938-1969

You said that Margaret died aged 66,so this one is sounding well worth looking at.

Deaths Mar 1952

HOLLIDAY    Margaret   age 66    Spen Valley    2d   483

She may have been in hospital or died away from home,so the death would have to be registered where she actually died. Middle names would not always be given if the informant of the death did not know the deceased that well.

Here's the link to Leeds why not give them a ring to see if they can help with any further details

please contact us for more information.

Scroll down to War Memorials there’s email address & telephone number

they will need
Name of crem., persons name age & dod
there's no computerised records prior to Jun 1987 …....
perhaps also give the register reference number

Perhaps it might also be worth checking the 1929 Electoral Register
for witness Gladys Roebuck it might give an indication to her marital status

she may have just been a friend of the family and known as Aunt Gladys........

Thanks for all the help, Carol, Ladyhawke, Eric, et alia.
My GenesReunited credits have now expired so I am no longer able to do my own research on-line, but I'll try to follow-up all of your suggestions in re: contacting various agencies.
I've already sent s-d the link to the MoD records.

As for who is who and who is married to what, it's all getting a little confusing, especially since s-d is not entirely sure of when granny died or exactly how old she was. He's 80 now, so the brain cells are dying off quite quickly and memory is just something fading into ... well ... memory! :)
