Unless you have Emily's b/c naming a different father, Emily may be a full sister to your step dad's grandmother. We assume they have different fathers, but nothing certain ....

That is, of course, correct Ruskie.
Only thing is ... s-d is not bothered about this side of the family so we won't be purchasing a b-c.
Most of the people on this side are now in place, or at least for as far back as we want to go; it's the HOLLIDAY side of things that has always caused the problems here. :(

Right, I'm going to resurrect this thread and try and point it in another direction.

I am looking for Herbert Trevor Holliday
  • born 9th May 1908 but I don't know where! (date confirmed in the 1939 register)
  • only child of Margaret Annie Holliday and an unknown father
  • married 4th April 1929 to Jessie Beardshall in Scarborough
  • resident 5th October, 1939 at 16 Howard Street, Scarborough with wife Jessie, children Tom (and 2 other private ones)
  • in 1939 he was a Fire Brigade Driver
  • died 12th July 1957, Scarborough
  • cremated 16th July 1957 at Cottingley Crematorium, Leeds, West Yorkshire

I can't find him anywhere else on AŁ!
Where is he in 1911? And his mother?
Has anybody come across them in 1921?
Where is she in 1939?
I can't even find his birth recorded anywhere.
I do know that there is a lot of controversy that he was born illegitimately and nobody ever knew the father (other than Margaret of course!) and it was never discussed.
The mother's name is correct as she is confirmed by the sole remaining grandchild (one of the two private names in the 1939 register).

Can anyone please throw any light on this chap (and his mother?)  ???

Yes, I've just come across this myself, although I haven't bought the images.
I have discovered that the birth which I discounted long ago could well be right, because...

• I have found a birth for a Herbert Holliday on the correct date of 9th May 1908 in Withington, suburb of Manchester!
• The mother’s name was Ada Holliday, a domestic servant
• No father’s name
• In the 1911 census there is an Ada Halliday/Holliday (born Leeds c1883) visiting a couple in Leeds; she is single and has her two-years-old son, Herbert (born Manchester) with her.
• In the 1921 census there is a Herbert Holliday, born Manchester, living in Scarborough; there is also an Ada Holliday, born Stockton, living in Scarborough

The birthdates don't tally for the two Adas, however, and neither do the birthplaces but it's mighty convincing without actually paying to see, which I might have to do.
