RootsMagic6: Attaching Family Search records as a source
« on: Wednesday 16 July 14 13:42 BST (UK) »
Hi

I'm a newbie to this software and I'm finding it quite tough going! I've sat through a few webinars on the RM website but feel a little bamboozled. I've certainly picked up some useful tips and am slowly working out how to do bits and bobs, but some skills still elude me.

One of these is how to attach a web-based source to a person in RM. To give an example, in my tree is Lightfoot Pashby, Yorkshire, who is christened in Hackness at St. Peter's Church on 28 Aug 1737. I know this is true as I have a copy of the Parish Registers, but there is a FamilySearch record here https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/NBM9-X5S which confirms it. My question is, how do I attach that webpage to my person? Or do I simply add it as a 'Person note'?  :-\

Hi MT,

If you have a copy of the parish register then I see no need to add the FamilySearch record, unless it gives different or additional information. Primary sources are almost always preferable to secondary sources, so adding the FamilySearch record does not make anything more certain.

However, what I do with FamilySearch records is create a source for the data set (e.g. Family Search, England Births and Christenings, https://familysearch.org/search/collection/1473014.), then in the citation details add the film number (e.g. 844554).

Thanks for the advice, Alexander.
There will, of course, be people in my tree for whom I do NOT have copies of the births in a register, so I will need to be able to attach web-pages in some way, so I'll give this a try.

Also, I tend not to add the link to the individual record to the source because that very likely will change over time and end up not working, then it's a big pain to correct all your sources. I do just sometimes add the record link to the fact notes for easy access.

In actual fact I've now discovered the next best thing for this which is to use the websearch facility with each person.
Throws up a lot of non-matches, but usually mine are there somewhere!

Hi MT

For website sources where a website link might change over time (most of them??) I try to make a copy of the page/image. For some sites, I find it easier to print the web page to a file (if you use Windows there's a "print to file" option producing an .xps file).  I then add this file (using Add Media) to the relevant fact/person - e.g. to the christening fact in your example - together with an appropriate source/citation for the fact as Alexander outlined.  Some computers have a "print screen" button which can be used in a similar way to create a file.

There is no right or wrong way to do this in RM, whatever works for you.

Good luck.

That's what I was doing with the other family tree software that I was using, Malcolm, but I was beginning to drown under the weight of stored images of certificates and records. I was just looking for a way which didn't require me to create a huge library of scans/screen grabs.

Many thanks for the suggestions made in this thread.
