Bertram Henry Basten (b.1888 Merton, Surrey)
« on: Saturday 19 July 14 15:07 BST (UK) »
I have lost Bertram and his parents from 1891 onwards.

His parents were George and Esther (George's second wife) who in 1890 were imprisoned for 6 months with hard labour for wilful neglect of a child under 14.

This could cover Bertram or any of his half siblings, Jeanne, Winifred and Edward who were all under 14 at the time.

I have no idea where Bertram, George or Esther have gone after the 1891 census in Battersea where the family are all back together after the parents came out of prison (RG12 431 92 44).

Edward, Winifred and Jeanne all get married and have families before 1911 but Bertram and his parents have disappeared although I think that Esther marries again in 1902 in Steyning, Sussex (where her stepdaughter Jeanne 'marries'  - but this another story as her marriage to her husband Louis Dent is registered in Wandsworth in 1898 and again in Steyning in 1904)

Thanks
Ruth

The mistreated child was Edward Knight Basten, 12, systematically starved by his father & stepmother, expelled from school for stealing other children's food and kept locked in the cellar at times. At trial he was reported to be emaciated.  The other children were healthy and well cared for.

Per various newspaper reports.

It looks like Louis Randolph DENT was a sergeant in the RMLI and would have needed permission to marry- maybe he wasn't given that in 1898 so actually married for real in 1904 in Steyning, even though they already had children. ;D

If George's first wife was Annie, then this seems to be them in 1881.

George Bastin    27
Annie L. Bastin    25
Jeanne M. Bastin    4
Ernest K. Bastin    3

And this is his birth, can't see an Edward at all,as mentioned by AVM as being the mistreated child.

Births Jun 1878

Basten    Ernest Kingett        Kingston    2a   280
