Copeland Family
« on: Wednesday 23 July 14 23:52 BST (UK) »
Hi fellow members. I have just come across Roots Chat in my search to be able to fill in gaps on my family tree. My great grandfather was David McGimpsey who married Catherine Copeland in County Down 12/11/1859. Catherine's was born 1846? - father was Thomas Copeland of Edendeewry County Down. Does any member have questions/information we can share on Catherine & her father Thomas.
Thank you,
David McGimpsey  :)

Hello, and welcome to RootsChat!

If you haven't already done so, a good way to make surname connections with other members is to enter your surname interests in the Surname Interests Table (SIT), and to check there whether others are researching these names.

This can be found at http://surname.rootschat.com/ , there is a link to it under "Your Tools" at the bottom of each Rootschat page.

The more people who enter their surnames, the more chance there will be of making a connection!

In the meantime, I will move this thread to the Down board.  ;)

This appears to be the marriage on FamilySearch
https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/FGCP-RGY
They are giving an earlier date for Catherine's possible birth.

Thomas would be from Edenderry I would think

well done Sinann, to recap  David McGimpsey who married Catherine Copeland in County Down 12/11/1859.  Catherine's was born 1846? –[ a wee bit early or dates wrong] father was Thomas Copeland of Edendeewry County Down  I couldn’t find this townland unless it’s a variant spelling for  Edenderry in the civil parish of Drumbo. Please tell us if it’s a transcription spelling or your source. The Ulster place name society doesn’t have a record of it as well.

However at this rate you will be connecting to COPLAND in Co. Down who came over with Sir John de Courcy in 1177   Inv 2012 p46  AND McGIMPSEY   family   Newtownards an Irish family that converted to Protestantism by mid 1700s    TMUOPp 87 see
Ros Davies  http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~rosdavies who also has many other records of McGimpsey and Copeland  in Donaghadee and newtownards obviously related and even Copelands in Drumbo Co Down that includes Edenderry which helped me start, but  then I switched to Ancestryireland without much success, and finally I went  to the winner of today www.familysearch.org

Trying to build a FH picture from Ros Davies website so before we run into David  who else was living in the parish of that name earlier

From David McGimpsey. In reply to posts on my original 14th July.
Catherine Copland & David McGimpsey were both born 1838. They married 12th November 1859. David died 2nd February 1914 & Catherine 13th November 1907. They are buried somewhere in Movilla (yet to confirm by finding site). Their children Sarah b 1863. Robert b1865 lived 5 months. Robert John b1871, my grandfather. Eleanor b1867 married Samuel Nicholson. David John b1869. Sarah married John McBurney & stayed in Ireland but her brothers & sister left & came to New Zealand. All born in Donaghadee. The McGimpsey family church was Ballyblack Presbyterian. Hope you can fill in on Robert, Davids Father & Thomas, Catherines father. Also burial details of David & Catherine.
