George & Sarah Fletcher of Leitchfield, Grayson County, Kentucky
I would very much like to find out about George Fletcher & his wife Sarah & their children of Leitchfield, Grayson County in Kentucky. George was born in England in the 1850's & arrived in America around 1882. There is a newspaper article from 1907 which explains a little about George & his circumstances which tells of how he parted with his first wife in England & moved to live in America where he married & had a family. The article tells of his second wife dying around 1905/1906 when he sank into a great depression. During this sad period of his life he gave thought to his first wife & family & he wrote to them asking if they might like to go out to join him in America which they did. The article tells of their reunion after 40 years of being apart & of how they re-married in Louisville.
I am hoping to find out more about George & his American wife Sarah. I live in England & have tried to look for information about the family but have only been able to find the 1900 census for the family which is as follows........
https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/M94C-9F7Cut & pasted information removed due to copyright issues ~ moderatorFrom the newspaper article, it seems that George was a building contractor who was well known in the area & was responsible for the building of several handsome residences, the Lindsey-Wilson College & dormitory & the banking House in Jamestown etc so I am hoping that someone might be able to point me in the right direction as to where I might be able to find out more about him & his life in Kentucky.
The article points to his wife coming from a prominent Grayson family ~ I know from the census that his wife was named Sarah M but I do not know her maiden name. Could anyone help me with this too please? I'm afraid that I do not know where & when they married either.
I know that after the reconciliation with his first wife & grown up children that they moved away from Kentucky settling in California. There is no mention of his & Sarah's children moving with them in the old family stories & I wondered if they might not have survived?
As I am in England I am finding it very difficult to seek out the information which I would like to learn about for our family tree so any help at all would be most appreciated.
Thank you.
