Smart Family
« on: Friday 25 July 14 16:23 BST (UK) »
I'm looking for information on the family of Thomas William Smart.   He was born about 1853 in Bath, Somerset.   He married Phillis Milliner in 1879 in Cold Ashton, Gloucestershire.   She was baptised in Cold Ashton 27 Sep 1856.   I believe they emigrated to the USA in 1884 with their 3 daughters - Ella Rose born Swainswick, Somerset 1880, Annie born Charlcombe, Somerset 1882 and Emma born Cold Ashton, Gloucestershire 1883.

Any information on their Atlantic crossing and subsequent life in USA greatly appreciated.

Dave

That's great CaroleW, do you know the best way to access passenger lists?   The family lived in Gloucestershire so I guess Bristol would have been the nearest port.

Thomas died 1905:

Annie married 1903:

freebmd shows that Ella Rose Smart was b. 1880 but died 1881, so she won't be found travelling with the family.  A immigration record isn't immediately apparent for them - but they could have come through one of several US ports or via Canada, and Thomas may have gone ahead of the rest, so not always that easy to spot families on shipping lists in this time period.  I would not assume they went from their nearest port, or that they arrived at the one closest to their eventual residence in the US.

Shipping lists can be found at various places including familysearch, various archive sites, and pay sites.

Thanks jorose.   I appreciate that there are an infinite number of variables and permutations particularly at the end of the 19th century.   I'll follow your hints and try and track them down  :)

Hi Dave,

WW2 Draft Registration for son Levi (seems to go by Lee) Smart

https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.3.1/TH-267-12394-133136-61?cc=1861144

Find a grave for Levi (Lee)

http://www.findagrave.com/cgi-bin/fg.cgi?page=gr&GSln=smart&GSbyrel=all&GSdyrel=all&GSst=40&GScnty=2242&GScntry=4&GSob=n&GSsr=1&GRid=31606174&df=all&
An error ..lists death 1864....should be 1964 re gravestone.

Cheers,
DB
