Sobieskeith

Hoping someone can help with this rather unusual name.

I have a Sophia Stevens christened 19 Sep 1824 at Brierley Hill. Father Elijah, mother Anne.

Elijah Stevens (I assume the same one) christened 8 Oct 1797 at Brierley Hill. Father Dudley, mother Sobieskeith.

So far I haven't found a marriage for Dudley and Sobieskeith but there is one for Dudley Stevens and Sophia Hancox, 31 Dec 1792 at St Mary, Kingswinford.

Could this Sobieskeith have been known as Sophia? The date for this marriage would fit along with Elijah's daughter being called Sophia. I must admit, I haven't come across this name before but there seems to have been a fair few in Staffs.

Regards Eric

Sobieskeith sounds a rather unusual name! Have you seen the actual Parish Register, or are you relying on someones transcription of what may have been poor writing, or marred by an ill placed ink blob?

Hi, I had a similar experience with a Joseph Hood marrying a SOBY Billingham 1799 Halesowen. 2 baptism records then show SOBY in 1800 and 1802, Sobey in 1806 and all subsequent children born mother is Sophia, she also dies as Sophia. I too would suggest you try to seethe original entry, a witness may hold some clue.

I agree with lizb that it may be a mistranscription.

If you have a copy of the parish register can you post it here for us to look at please.

When you say there are a fair few Sobieskeiths in Staffordshire, where have you seen them?

Just wonder if the following could be kept on the back burner. From familysearch there's a Richard SOBIESKI bapt 11.6.1780 Dudley with parents John and Hollies. There are a couple of similar spellings for baptisms in and around that area.

No, I haven't seen the actual entry. Only info is off F S.

However there are quite a lot of the same and slight variations of the name. I was wondering if the name is a variation of Sophie/Sophia and she used Sophia on the marriage.

I don't think the registers are available on-line.

Have you looked for a birth/baptism for Sophia Hancox? It would be interesting to confirm her given name.

You should contact the Staffordshire RO to try to get a copy of the original. If you have names and date many ROs used to send a copy for a minimal cost. (They'd probably send it via email these days). It may be worth a try.

I haven't found a christening for Sophia Hancox or Sobieskeith Hancox, yet.

I found the burial, 2 Dec 1798 at Brierley Hill, showing her as born 1776. This would make her about 16/17 if the marriage is the correct one.
