« on: Sunday 27 July 14 23:35 BST (UK) »
I am looking into Thomas clements...In the 1911 census he is married to lily (there sons birth cert names her maiden name parker) I cannot find a marriage cert for thomas and lily and on the census there is a red line through the years of marriage....Is It possible they never married? thomas was married before but was a widow!

Which 1911 entry are you referring to - the one in Gloucs or the one in Northants?  One has a wife Lily and the other has Eliza Lily and both have crossed out entries

The red line is there because only women should have filled in those questions!

The question asked on the census form was:
"Completed years the present marriage has lasted."

So an entry of 4 means 4 complete years - and a marriage in 1906! ;D

The entry "Completed years the present marriage has lasted." has a red line through it because it has been entered twice, once opposite the husband and once opposite the wife, so the duplicate entry has been crossed out. The same thing has happened on the one in Northants. The entry should be opposite the wife as shown in the examples on the reverse of the schedule form.  http://www.rootschat.com/links/0193j/
